Chromecast 4K with DTS?

markdj
Community Member

Is anyone successfully using the Chromecast 4k to play back DTS encoded video and have DTS go to their surround amp?

I've tried VLC with audio passthrough option on and I set the CC4K to output ac3 and dts in the settings too but it didn't work.

I've tried using kodi for playback, using passthrough, androidRAW, etc.

The connection from CC4K goes direct to amp, but DTS is never output. DD5.1 works fine.

Is anyone having the same issue or not and it's all working with your surround amp?

Hello markdj,

Thanks for reaching out. Chromecast with Google TV devices only supports Audio Formats listed below:

  • Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Digital Plus
  • Dolby Atmos (pass-through)

This is the reason why the connection from your Chromecast with Google TV (4K) never outputs DTS. You can check this support article to see information about the Chromecast Audio specification.

Thanks,

Jennifer

It doesn't specify in that link article.

The main issue is that in the settings of the Chromecast Google TV 4k, it specifically mentions support for Dts pass through and that is not working.

Thank you for helping out on this thread, Jennifer!

Hey there markdj,

Here is a more detailed article on all of the video and audio formats that the different Cast devices support. Near the bottom of that page, here is a list of all of the officially supported audio passthrough codecs:

  • AC-3 (Dolby® Digital™ audio technology)
  • E-AC-3 (EC-3, Dolby® Digital Plus™ audio technology)
  • MPEG-H Audio
  • Dolby® Atmos™

If DTS worked at one point with the Chromecast with Google TV (4K), it technically wasn't supported. If it is something you'd like to see officially supported, I would highly encourage you to submit feedback to Google.

I hope this helps; let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,
Jeran

Just had an update from another user. Dts pass through did work before the last Chromecast software update. Doesn't work now.

No surround sound format works on my CCwGTV for almost 3 months now.

Google pushed an update that basically bricked the sound on mine.

You won't get any help from anyone here. Google doesn't support it's hardware. At all.

Yes! when are they going to fix this no 5.1 issue, they have been saying "they are working on it" for over 12 months, I say CRAP!

I haven't noticed if there are any new updates or for the ccwgtv but it would be useful to keep this thread open so that when an update happens, people can report back on whether Dts works again as it suggests it should in the settings.

Hey there markdj,

No problem at all! We can keep this thread open. Once the next update drops, feel free to update the thread if you get the chance to test this again.

Best regards,

1. Audio settings Chromecast (automatic)
2. Chromecast connected with reciever trough hdmi in
3. hdmi out to television
4. Kodi Settings (i use chromecast 4K  wireless and even hdr content video/audio plays without problems)
a.  Kodi Nexus V20.2
b. Settings - Player - Adjust display refresh rate: On start / stop
c. Settings - system - Audio - Number of channels: 2.0, scroll down to Adio Passtrough - enable, Passtrough output device:  Audiotrack(RAW), Android IEC packer,
d. Enable: Dolby Digital (AC3) capable reciever, Enable Dolby Digital (AC3) transcoding, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS capable reciever

That's it, it works perfectly.

Any idea about when is going to be deployed a version which has DTS support again?

It has DTS support, read my former message about Kodi (charleyr)

I have seen it, but it should be working also in other apps like Plex or VLC

Also since the update in May, playing FLAC 5.1 files in VLC has become quite a pain. Sometimes it picks up the 5.1 audio in the first try, some others I need to go to the audio config, switch it to stereo, then switch it back to multichannel. It never happened before.
