I am about to go on holiday . I am being encouraged to buy a Chromecast with TV in order to play multiple apps/programmes whilst away. I am also told this could be used to widen programme availability back home. Can I use Chromecast with my iPhone? I find it all a little confusing and am looking for the simplest system to give me TV accessibility. I have downloaded Google Home app on my phone and do have a Gmail account. Frankly I am feeling rather overwhelmed by it all.

I am not entirely sure how you intend to use this.
Chromcast, itself, does not give you content. It is a piece of hardware that connects to a TV and acts as a portal to other services like YouTube and Netflix to show their content (think of it as something that makes your TV VERY smart). You still need to subscribe to other services to get their content.
Also, depending on WHERE you are traveling, you may encounter geographic limits.
Finally, you have to have internet access wherever you are using your Chromecast. All of the content comes streaming over the internet.
