I've got exactly the same problem—previously working Chromecast just stopped working yesterday. From looking around the internet, it seems like a recent update might have caused compatibility problems with TP-Link range extenders—do you have one of those?

I'm having same issue, was fine yesterday, gone today. Apparently casting from laptop is no longer supported but that happened over a year ago and everything was fine til now.

Hello there, bizarrely I fixed it by Simply removing Chromecast from its USB socket for a few minutes!!!

futuraprime and HOCPaddler, we hope that helps but, if you're still having trouble, please reboot your Wi-Fi router and factory reset your Chromecast device.

Unfortunately, no help at all. We’ve reset the router and factory-reset the Chromecast to no avail. It seems like it’s just dead.

Hello futuraprime,
Thanks for getting back to us. Could you please try to connect your Chromecast to a mobile hotspot so we can isolate the issue? Also, try to manually connect the Chromecast to the Chromecast SSID. Here's how: go to the phone’s Settings > Open WiFi and connect to the Chromecast SSID (Example: Chromecast1234, Living Room TV, Bedroom TV, etc.) > Go to the Google Home app and try to set it up again.
