Chromecast w Google TV frame rate stutter

salputrid
Community Member

This happens across all apps some more than others.

I am using the Google TV interface.

This was not an issue with the Chromecast 3rd gen when I cast from my iphone.

I have the same problem on both of my CC (4k with google tv) which have been been recently upgraded to android 12 ...

It is very noticeable and annoying.

I have fiber at home with mesh wifi, speed test gives me between 250 and 300 mbps consistently. So network is not an issue.

I never had any issue like that with any of my CCs (I have a 2nd gen, an Ultra and two 4k with google tv).

I'm pretty convinced that it's related to the new frame matching feature, but even disabling it doesn't fix the problem ...

I used to love the device but of course a forced update ruined everything ...

Identical experience here. Android 12 showed up and the Google TV started dropping frames across all my input sources. Being that this is Google, I opted to buy an AppleTV while I wait for a fix.

It's like nobody there actually uses or QAs the product.

Thanks for posting! Hope to see an improvement.

Thanks for the info, I updated both of my CC and its too early to know if it s better or not.

I think it improved a bit (still had a few quick freezes but did not experienced slow down of frame rate yet)

Menus are still slow and laggy (which is a shame considering it doesn't display much) but I could live with it if playback is smooth which is the most important.

Even before the update I realized I did not witness any problem watching Netflix, my main issues came from Disney+ Apple TV+ and Prime video so maybe it's related to the apps ?

I watched ~90 mins of Netflix last night on the new update and I didn't see any stuttering. I'm not ready to claim 100% it's fixed, but things look good.

Good to know, I experienced the same thing with Netflix but I can’t remember having issues with Netflix so … let’s wait a bit more.

one weird thing though : they added commercials on the main page ??

Nope. Frame rate issue reappeared. Also, the Google TV resolution will not stay at 4K. Overnight it reverts to 1080p. I think the unit is rebooting or resetting.
It worked perfectly fine on Android 11. Why does Google have to mess stuff up?

I confirm I have the same problems on my side. Still no issues with Netflix but watching the first episode of willow on Disney + showed some frame rate slowdowns. It was fine for most of the episode but when it started it never went back to what it was at the beginning.
Going back to the menu and back to the app seemed to help but after some time it reappears. It’s almost like the memory was full or something …

Anyway I used to love this CC it was perfect for my usage and now it’s unusable. I guess Android 13 will not be available for the CC any time soon so I don’t know what to do …

i don’t understand why we are the only one complaining. We should not be the only one experiencing this issue and if we were more vocal maybe google would acknowledge the issue …

Thanks for the update. I watched Apple TV without issues last night. Still have some other apps to check. It may at this point be app-based. But yah, we cannot be the only ones.

Today I watched the second episode of willow on Disney+ and still frame rate issues (I think it’s less than before but it could also be placebo effect) however after that I switched to the old man still on Disney + this time no issue whatsoever.

i was about to search for the differences in terms of frame rate but actually one big difference exists beyond frame rate. Willow is 4K and the old men is in HD. I had issues with disenchanted as well and it was also in 4K. This could explain why I never witnessed issues with Netflix because I pay only for HD …

what do you think ? Do you experience something similar ?

I do not have the 4K option so it is not an issue for me. It looks like we should all just buy Apple TV. Google`s rollout is preposterous.

Actually I tried again with the same TV Show in HD and witness problems this time.

It seems random ... really disappointed ...

https://support.google.com/googletv/thread/189986376/sync-skipping-issues-with-chromecast-with-googl...

Did anyone tried to use cast instead of the app directly as a workaround to check if it does fix the issue ?

It would be disappointing  to not use the UI but still better than nothing if it works ...

Hey folks,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Chromecast with Google TV devices. Could you please try to plug in the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) or (4K) on a different HDMI port on your TV? Plugging it on a different TV screen if one is available and rebooting your Wi-Fi router might also help.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Could you please explain how this would fix the problem? If you look at this thread you'll see that most users have tried many possible solutions, but it appears that the device is simply not up to the quality of built-in streaming apps. I did try what you suggested but that did not stop the problem, and neither did I expect it to. Using another TV is not an option. It doesn't make sense to replace a TV that costs thousands so I can get a device that costs less than $100 to work. I really like the voice search facility of the Chromecast - the Tizen one is not useful at all - but the price of this feature is very poor viewing. It looks like the Chromecast 4K + Google TV - hardware is simply not up to it, as Google should have the resources to produce streaming software of similar quality to Samsung (and others).

Thank you!! This is working in 2024 on A13

Yup, may return the new one and just go back to the 3rd gen. Disappointing.

It's a shame, I upgraded because I had a problem with my Ultra (Disney + stuttered in 4k, probably after an update ... issue posted in the communities with lots of Details but just ignored ...) and now after several month of being really happy with my unit (and buying a second one for my bedroom) it's now degraded ...

I've just got the new (non 4k) Chromecast With Google TV and the playback is terrible! Worse on Disney+ but not great on almost all apps. Its dropping frames constantly. In comparison my 2013 1st Gen Chromecast can play back the same material perfectly.

I've tried all kinds of settings changes, different HDMI inputs, nothing makes any improvement.

How can a brand new product be this bad when the 2013 first gen is still perfect? If it wasn't for some services dropping support for the 2013 CC I'd be going back to it full time!

Personally I gave up and bought an Apple TV which works perfectly and is so  much better in every way.

still using the one in my bedroom but it’s less critical for me … I won’t trust google product again …

Last night we rented Jurassic world: Dominion through Google play and cast it to the Chromecast with Google TV (4k version). The TV only copes with 1080p but can play 50 and 60Hz. Internet connection giving 130Mbps. Frequent frame rate reduction. Sometimes the rate changes when the film cuts to a new camera angle.

I'm getting a lot more of this since the recent updates. The above example is Google content playing on a Google device but I've also seen it on Disney plus. The sound always remains fine, it's just the frame rate affected.

Hi folks,

I'm sorry for the late response.

Playmo77, we understand why you feel that way. If you still wish to continue troubleshooting your device, let us know — we're always here for you.

dfluff and amh15, have you also tried the other suggested steps above like plugging it on a different TV screen? If you haven't yet, please try that and let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer, of course I tried the above but it is not related. The issue we are facing are performance issues with noticeable frame rate dropping. I have never experienced that in more than a year of use and is happening only since the new Android tv 12 update.

i even tried the « double » factory reset I found on other threads…

Jennifer, I have tried the new device with a couple of different HDMI displays (from different manufacturers) and the outcome is the same.

I have the same stutter issue after the new android 12 update. I did not do a factory reset yet.

I tried switching frame matching to all 3 options with no success. It's like the video tries to match frames in some scenes and you see skipped frames. It's really weird on the eyes. It's not a constant thing, and I don't see it in the youtube app.

I stutters randomly in primevideo and hbomax.

same here no solution to it so I've switched back to 3rd gen chromecast where I have no problems. extremely disappointed by the lack of QA before release.

I've also completed the form.

For what it's worth, I don't have a lot installed on the Chromecast, 14 apps in total.

BBC iPlayer, Amazon prime video, Disney plus, Netflix, YouTube, itvx, my 5, moonlight game streaming, Pluto TV, steam link, Plex, paramount+ (was not installed when the problem started). Also BBC sounds, YouTube music, button mapper, send files to TV, and AnExplorer.

Storage 693MB available.

I have the same problem. When I cast screen from my Samsung S10 video stutters and sound is out of sync. Very disappointed with Chromecast.

Your problem may not be the same one. Are you doing a screen share? That generally will be pretty jerky and poor unless you have great 5GHz WiFi and few neighbours or family sharing spectrum with you. On the other hand if you're casting Disney plus or something, using the cast icon in the app, or using the Chromecast user interface, the signal is down from the cloud to your Chromecast (your phone just triggers it). This should run smoothly every time if you have acceptable internet.
