Cooling not working

Will not cool when thermo calls for it. I have an Amana dual fuel heat pump 5 years old. Nest worked fine when installed last year. Started blowing hot air at the end of cooling season so switched back to old thermostat and it worked fine. Tried nest again this year same thing. Will not cool. I did a factory reset and it’s up to date. When I run a test regular cooling blows cool air but stage 2 cooling blows hot air. I also switched from O to B in the settings.

Hi @Bargs31,

The fact that your Nest thermostat worked fine last year for cooling and now only blows hot air during cooling season suggests there might be an issue with the Nest itself, the wiring, or the heat pump system. Here's how to approach troubleshooting:

1. Nest Thermostat:

  • Double-Check Settings: Ensure your Nest thermostat is set to "cool" mode and the desired cooling temperature is lower than the current room temperature.
  • Schedule and Auto Mode: Verify your Nest's cooling schedule or auto mode is set to activate cooling when needed.
  • Professional Installation Recommendation: Since the Nest worked fine previously, consider contacting a qualified HVAC technician who specializes in Nest thermostats. They can diagnose if there's a hardware issue with the Nest itself.

2. Wiring Issues:

  • Compatibility: While unlikely, double-check the Nest thermostat's compatibility with your specific Amana dual fuel heat pump model. You can find compatibility information on the Nest website or consult your Amana heat pump manual.
  • Wiring Verification: If you're comfortable with electrical work, ensure the wiring between the Nest thermostat and the heat pump is secure and matches the original thermostat's wiring configuration. A professional HVAC technician can also verify the wiring for you.

3. Heat Pump System:

  • Test with Old Thermostat: As you mentioned, your old thermostat worked fine for cooling. Try reconnecting the old thermostat and running the cooling system again. If it cools properly, it might indicate an issue with the Nest's compatibility with your heat pump's specific cooling stages.
  • Contact Amana Support: Reach out to Amana support for troubleshooting guidance specific to your dual fuel heat pump model. They might have recommendations or identify known compatibility issues with Nest thermostats.
  • Schedule HVAC Service: If none of the above solutions work, consider scheduling a service call with a qualified HVAC technician. They can diagnose the cooling problem with your Amana heat pump system and ensure it's functioning correctly.

On the other hand, you can call our customer service line for further assistance.

Regards,

Mario.
