Doorbell lost connection, won’t charge

JamesMK

Nest doorbell has been working fine for months but this morning it went offline, became totally unresponsive and now won’t charge (battery version, was showing 60% before).

This may be connected to recent cold weather, as I have read on other posts here, but winter has only just begun and if it’s going to hibernate until spring it’s not going to be much use to me.

@JamesMK

How cold has it been where you live? According to Google Nest:

"If you’ve connected your Nest Doorbell (battery) to your existing doorbell wiring, the wires don’t directly power the doorbell. Instead, the battery is trickle charged by the power that comes through the wires, and the doorbell runs off the battery charge. At temperatures between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), the doorbell can continue to work, but the battery will drain because it can’t be charged. If the battery drains completely, the doorbell will shut down, and you’ll need to bring it inside to be charged."

Hi - thanks for your reply.
I have read about devices failing at low temperatures but here it’s only just below freezing overnight, nowhere near the -20C operating limit.
I did bring it indoors to charge last night, to test the theory, but it did not respond.

@JamesMK

The battery doorbell always runs off of the battery and the battery cannot charge at temperatures below freezing, so the practical lowest operating temperature is 0 degrees Celsius, 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

When you brought it in to charge, did you encounter the following (from the link above)?

"If the temperature is below 32°F (0°C) and the battery is low, bring it inside to a warm place, preferably at room temperature. The battery can start to charge slowly once its temperature rises past 32°F (0°C). It will charge faster when it warms up.

While the battery is still cold, the Home app will show “Charging paused” or “Charging slowly” and a long estimated charge time. The estimated charge time will get shorter as the battery warms up."

There is a very long thread in this forum about cold weather concerns with the battery doorbell:

Thanks for your reply.
I did bring the device indoors to warm up but it remained unresponsive to charging. Today I will try a different cable then a reset.

Interesting how that cold weather message is rather different to that on the box!

As I live in an apartment block, my front door is technically indoors so I not really buying the cold temp reasoning. It’s cold, but not that cold.

Hey folks,

JamesMK, oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! To confirm, were you able to properly charge your doorbell? After your doorbell has warmed up, try to reinstall the doorbell before the device temperature falls outside of the operating temperatures, or wait to reinstall the doorbell on a warmer day. Refer to the Help Center article on how to install Nest Doorbell (wired) or install Nest Doorbell (battery).

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Thanks,
Archie

Hi Archie, thanks for your response.
The device did not respond to charging and has been replaced by Google. Hopefully the new one will survive winter temperatures.
Regards

James
