We’ve had our Chromecast 1st gen for years. It’s worked fine on the same TV during that time, even when Wi-Fi networks changed. Today, it showed the screen saying “reconnect me” and that it couldn’t find the network.
I’ve tried the following so far:
- Removed Chromecast from the Google Home app
- Factory reset the device
- Deleted and re-downloaded the Google Home app
- Reset the internet router
Each time when I attempt to connect, I follow these steps:
1. Connect to Chromecast Wi-Fi network
2. Confirm the correct code is on the screen and in the Home app
3. Connect to home Wi-Fi network
The device then goes back to the “Reconnect Me” screen before going back to the “welcome” screen. The Home app says there was an error connecting (“something went wrong”) and that the Chromecast might be set up but the app cannot connect to it.
It seems to be a problem with the chromecast itself connecting to the correct Wi-Fi network, but I’ve tried quite a few things to no avail. Any other ideas?

Hey there Esl550,
These networking issues can be a headache to deal with, so I'd be happy to help you figure this out. First, go ahead and follow the troubleshooting steps listed in this article. If that doesn't help resolve this issue, then also check out this article. Just keep in mind that your Chromecast 1st Generation can only connect to the 2.4GHz network band.
I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!
Best regards,
Jeran
