google home devices plays the wrong radio station

BobbyG

None of my google home devices will play the correct radio station.  I ask it to play WRAL FM 101.5 Raleigh HD 1 and it plays WRAL FM 101.5 Raleigh HD 2 through tune In.  It used to work  but no longer.  Any ideas?

Same here. I have a mini nest and a Lenovo display, using TuneIn. Just started about a week ago. Ask for CBC Radio One Saint John, NB and plays London, Ontario.

And, when I ask for "CBC Radio One London, Ontario" I get CBC Radio One Thunder Bay 🙂

The workaround that works for me is to specify the frequency, eg, "Hey Google! Play CBC Radio One 93.5 London", which fixed the problem.

When asking Google to play the radio, I stretched out the word raaaaadio - and said, "Hey Google, play CBC raaaaaadio 1". And it worked. I got the correct station after many months of it playing the wrong station. I think it is anticipating what you are going to command and, then, tuning into the wrong station.

Same issue. If I ask it to play bbc radio 4 on my Google mini, it works perfectly. But, if then ask it just to play bbc radio 4 (I have Sonos speakers set up as the default speakers), it plays bbc radio 4 extra instead (on the Sonos speakers)

I didn't mention I also have a Sonos as the default speaker on a mini. Just tested and the same issue, fine on the mini without Sonos but wrong station on mini with Sonos.

In the UK I have the same issue, I have Home Mini's, Nest Hub and they all 8 times out of 10 play "Radio 2" when I say play "Radio 6" I don't know if it is assuming something about my demographic and trying to be clever  as "Two" does not sound like "Six" especially in my North Eastern / Geordie accent I'm sure

An update I contacted support directly (I subscribe to Google One) and got the (not unexpected) advice to reset one of the devices this seemed to work at first (a google mini) but has reverted back to type and didnt work at all on the Nest Hub

My reset didn't work either.

Same issue. Ask it to play the HD1 station, the voice prompt states that its playing the HD1 station from Tune in, proceeds to play HD2 station.  I went in and made a shortcut specifically to play the station, but it continues to play HD2

I have the same issue since months ago, workaround is to open TuneIn, select the radio then Chromecast, tried all sort of shortcuts trying to be the most specific possible but it doesn't work.

For me, it doesn't choose the local version of my radio station now.

P4 is a national radio station in Sweden and there are local versions.

Until a month ago it would automatically choose my local version correctly if I just said 'play p4' (in Swedish). I could also say 'play p4' uppland' (my local station).

Now if I say 'play p4' it plays the p4 gottland station (from the other side of the country) and says 'sorry I don't understand' if I say 'play p4 uppland'.

This changed about a month ago.

This works correctly with the assistant on my phone though.

Nest mini firmware 277099

Same here, doesn't work on my mini or Lenovo display, but okay on Assistant on my Android phone.

Yes, this is the same as I'm experiencing. "CBC Radio 1" or "CBC Radio 1 St. John's" used to play the local public radio station. But now it plays "CBC Radio 1 Corner Brook" no matter what I say. I just can't figure out what keywords will play the correct one. Right now I have to find it on the TuneIn app on my iPhone and cast to the speaker I choose.

Same exact boat, I had to buy small pocket radio so I could get the morning info from Ramraajh

I think I solved the issue. I googled to find out the actual radio station call sign for my local CBC radio One and it’s “CBN”. So saying “CBN Radio” seems to get the St. John’s NL feed.  Hope this helps someone.

Thanks. I'll give that a try tomorrow morning.

Nice find. Since our local NPR stations lacks programming we get from the next station over, this workaround won't quite work, sadly.

Hi folks,

@Mertonia, thanks for posting, if this is isolated to one radio station we suggest for you to contact them directly and get some feedback on what keyword you can use to play their radio station.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Juni

@Juniisn't it more likely my issue is the same as everyone else's here?

Hey folks,

Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. To confirm, does it happen to all radio stations? What type of Google Home/Nest device do you have? What is the current firmware version? Does the same issue happen when you use the Google Assistant app on your phone/tablet? Also, what country are you located in?

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

  • To confirm, does it happen to all radio stations? No, for me it only happens when trying to play WRAL - FM. This radio station has two HD stations,  one is called Mix 101:5  and the other is known as Cornerstone.  I want to listen to MIX 101.5 but Google only plays Cornerstone.
  • What type of Google Home/Nest device do you have? I have google home and google  Mini.
  • What is the current firmware version? I am not sure of the version.
  • Does the same issue happen when you use the Google Assistant app on your phone/tablet? No, but I use the Radio station icon for my phone.
  • Also, what Country are you located in ?   USA

Thank you for continuing to try and help.

I have a Google mini and the larger speaker. Weirdly whatever was going on seems to have leveled out. It was only ever the one station, and it was public radio. I am convinced it's a TuneIn issue not a Google issue. Since we have no choice about what app makes that connection, it's very difficult to troubleshoot. I did download the TuneIn app and repeatedly try to connect to the proper station using that and to be honest I'm not sure that it helped. I think it was justfluke that it seems to be finally working. I also found that Looking up the call letters that maybe aren't so commonly used and trying to use those might help. It certainly is frustrating.

Hi folks,

I really appreciate your responses and your outlook on this case. As much as we wanted to do all the troubleshooting with your Nest devices, as mentioned before, we only rely on the functions on the 3rd party apps, networks and services. In this case, it really looks like it's only isolated on specific stations with TuneIn. If your Nest devices are damaged, either hardware or software, then all the functions should be affected. Why don't we give it a few more days and see if TuneIn confirms a resolution.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan

What BS, it’s absolutely not Tunein. I’m in the UK and it doesn’t use Tunein, we’ve had nothing in the way of support about this. The fact is it is the devices themselves trying to guess and messing it up

PocyHake

Why is TuneIn being used for BBC stations? It is the speaker sending the information to TuneIn that is the problem it should be using BBC Sounds.

Hello everyone,

@scrambledheads, @PocyHake, apologies for the misunderstanding. I was referring to @marymary1 response and wasn't able to specify it. My bad! In the meantime, we tried the command "Hey, Google! Play BBC radio" on our end and, it worked. Could you try the command and check if it responds the way it should be?

Tell me how it goes.

Best,

Dan

There are multiple "BBC Radio"''s so that wouldn't work for me (presumably that just plays Radio 1 or BBC world depending where you are. When I use "play" to ask it to play "BBC Radio 6" which is the station I want it now plays one of my YouTube playlists, I have to say "Stream Radio 6" . If you look at my previous comments on here you can see I have multiple Google Devices and this is broken on all of them, it used to work and like everyone else it just stopped working.
It appears to be guessing / stopping listening at a certain point which is why presumably it gets it wrong.

Hi folks,

It would help a lot if you could do factory reset on your Nest speaker to revert it back to its default and original settings. Setting it back up is a must. Here's how.

Keep us posted.

Dan

Do you mean reset all of my devices? I have 9 minis, 1 hub and 2 Chromecasts, this could take sometime! They all have the same problem.

Hi PocyHake,

Apologies! It would help a lot if you could factory reset just one Nest speaker for us to test it out and see what happens.

Tell us how it goes.

Thanks.

Dan

That doesn’t work

Hard to believe it's Tunein's problem since I don't know that app, never used that app and have read a few to know not everyone said Tunein fo instance if you would have read mine I specifically said iheart radio about a million times...maybe, this is just and idea but maybe you could pass this problem along to someone that will do their job and actually look into the problem rather than obviously reading 1 complaint and throwing out a pass the buck response

Hi kari454,

We're sorry for the inconvenience. Would you mind if I ask if you have already tried to factory reset your Nest speaker to its default and original settings? If you have multiple speakers, we only need to reset one of them to test it out. It would really help us isolate your concern since it's been happening on multiple radio stations and networks. We would really appreciate it! Once done, kindly monitor and see if the behavior persists.

Best,

Dan

Hi kari454,

Chiming in to see if you still need assistance with this. Hope the previous post helped. Let us know if you have additional questions, otherwise we’ll be locking the thread.

Best,

Princess

The reset post? No it's been asked a million times and no it did nothing on any device. I actually researched every troubleshooting tip for this issue and have tried everything on everything and yet in this forum I only get repeated questions and responses because nobody is bothering to read ALL the comments, collect ALL the information and actually come up with a fixable (not pass the buck) solution

It didn’t help I’ve tried and as pointed out on previous posts a lot of people have multiple devices so this wouldn’t make sense. Can someone please take this a little more seriously

The issue is that Google uses TuneIn in the UK, but TuneIn only recognises BBC Radio 2 Wales or BBC Norfolk.

lock the thread. My Google home is in the bin as I only bought it to voice control my Sonos speakers

Yes as I've stated in several previous posts. The repeated questions and basic troubleshooting tips are getting really old....yes again I have tried it all...aside from throwing everything out and trying Alexa

It does t work
