Continued Conversation.jpg

Continued Conversation arrives on Gemini for Home! Starting today, you can ask follow-up questions without repeating "Hey Google," making your assistant noticeably faster and more natural to use.

Hello, Google Home & Nest Community!

Since launching early access, millions of you have made
Gemini for Home part of your daily lives. Your feedback has been our North Star. Today, we’re delivering on a top request by bringing Continued Conversation to Gemini for Home—now enhanced with deeper context and expanded to more users, countries, and languages than ever before.

What is Continued Conversation?

Continued Conversation allows you to have a back-and-forth dialogue with your assistant naturally, without having to say "Hey Google" before every single follow-up request.

How does it work? After you say "Hey Google" and ask your first question, the assistant will provide an answer and then keep the microphone active for a few seconds. You’ll see the lights on your device remain pulse or glow, signaling that it's ready for your next thought immediately—no wake word required.

With this release, we are progressing toward the vision of a voice assistant that feels like a true partner in conversation. Unlike the legacy version of this feature, which simply reopened the microphone for a distinct new question (and only for users using US-English), Gemini retains the conversational context of your previous exchange. This makes interactions significantly more intuitive; you can build on a topic,
control your smart home, or manage your calendar or shopping lists more easily.

See it in Action

Your daily interactions now flow much more like a real conversation:

  • You: "Hey Google, what's the weather like in Tokyo?"
  • Gemini: "It's currently 65 degrees and sunny in Tokyo."
  • You: "How about tomorrow?"
  • Gemini: (Gemini retains the context that you’re asking about Tokyo) "Tomorrow will be a bit cooler with a high of 60 degrees and a chance of rain."

Pro Tip: You can also use this for complex tasks such as meal planning, or organizing your to-do lists. Try asking for a recipe, and then immediately follow up with, “Give me a different version” or "Add those ingredients to my shopping list" as soon as the assistant finishes speaking.

Key Improvements

  • Supercharged with conversational context: Gemini for Home keeps the thread of the dialog, so when you ask a follow-up question you don’t have to repeat yourself, making for a much faster, smoother, and more intelligent experience.
  • Available in Multiple Languages: We’re taking a fan-favorite feature and making it global. Unlike the previous Assistant, which supported Continued Conversation only in English, Gemini for Home enables this feature for all supported languages and regions.
  • Smarter "Side-Talk" Detection: We’ve refined how Gemini detects your queries to make your conversations feel more natural. It can now better tell the difference between a follow-up question and a side conversation with someone else in the room—meaning fewer accidental activations and a lot more focus on you.
  • Consistent, Whole-Home Access: Continued Conversation now works for the entire home. Once enabled, everyone, including guests, can experience seamless conversations.

Continued Conversation starts rolling out today to Gemini for Home early access users and is available without a subscription. If you're looking for the ultimate conversational experience, you can unlock Gemini Live on supported speakers and displays by subscribing to Google Home Premium.
