See this thread,
I just installed a Nest wired doorbell and encountered the same issue. I have my own personal email address as my google account (not a gmail) and my wife also has a google account (not a gmail). Turns out they call these "Workspace" or "Gsuite" accounts and they have their functionality limited for some reasons in the Google Home app. It seems that only '@gmail.com' accounts can be added in to the Home.
I personally found it very frustrating, both with the support person's description about having to use a 'personal account' as he kept referring to. Ya, my wife's account is a personal email and google account, and eventually it became a bit more clear. Sooooo... basically the work around is everybody who you want to invite in to your google home requires a "@gmail.com" account.
Unfortunate but true.
Google. You really need to fix this. It's really annoying.

I stuggled with this for awhile. I set Home up with my paid google private domain workspace account which does not have an @Gmail.com domain name. Could not invite the Mrs. using her @Gmail.com address. Finally took the time to set up Home using my personal @Gmail.com account. Invite worked. Surprised that this bug would include their hosted domains.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. Surprising that Google never responded to this. I set up my Google home with a hotmail.com account and now it won't let me log into update the email address associated with it. How were you able to do this?
