Cooldown periods affecting ability to detect event - Nest Cam Outdoor - battery

Community Member

Being happy with the first gen Nest Cam outdoor (wired), I purchased the newer Nest Cam in/outdoor (battery), and the event detection seems to be very unreliable. After contacting Google support, they suggested changing the battery setting to "more recording" and creating a few activity zones, which I am trying out right now.

They did however indicate this 'cooldown' period thing to eliminate noise. While I appreciate Google trying to eliminate the noise, I would appreciate this being a configurable setting. After all, this is a 'security monitoring' device, and honestly, I prefer false positives way more in this case.

In addition, the event recording is limited. My other Nest cam will record as long as there is activity, which is quite important to me. If the cam detects for example someone, I want to see what that person was doing while being active in the monitored zone.

I never had any such issues with my first gen Nest outdoor cam...

Google, please fix this. If the cam needs to be wired to achieve this, fine, but trying to make it 'smart' to save battery does not really does it, unless you give the customer the option to turn this on/off.

The battery camera has to be plugged in with the optional power cable in order record continuously (24/7). Our battery camera, which we've had for almost 23 months, is plugged in, but if we unplug it so it's running on battery power, it does a poor job of coming out of "Idle" mode in time to detect and record events. And I've seen posts from other customers indicating that when on battery power, the camera seems to cut events short.  I'm glad ours is plugged in.

All of Google Nest's cameras and doorbells have a "cooldown" period, during which they will not send an additional notification if there is additional activity. (If you have a Nest Aware Plus subscription, recording continues; just no additional notification.) A year or so ago, a Google Nest Community Specialist posted a chart of the various "cooldown" periods (they're different for various cameras and doorbells), but shortly thereafter that post was deleted. So the "cooldown" periods are not publicly known, and they are not configurable.
