Google Nest battery doorbell

My nest doorbell is not detecting motion. It just recently (in the last week) started doing this. I have changed nothing. I only get notifications when the doorbell is actually pressed. I have removed and reinstalled the app, I have turned off and on the push notifications in phone settings, I have restarted by pressing the pinhole...the only thing I haven't done is a factory reset! Did something change recently that I didn't get notification about? I have a continuous Nest Aware subscription, so that shouldn't be the issue either.

Hi tkbartz,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry that your Nest Battery Doorbell isn't detecting motions. I understand how frustrating this must be. Don't worry, I'm here to help you.

Before I begin, let's consider that the Nest Doorbell battery runs algorithms to constantly analyze the video and audio data so it can determine whether it detected something that you might want to know about.

To detect anything besides a person, animal, or moving vehicle, the camera checks for general motion in the scene. It learns what's normally in its background view and looks for movement and changes. As a result, it can sometimes trigger not just for important things but also for minor things like tree branches that sway in the wind. If you only need your camera to detect people, animals, or moving vehicles, it's recommended that you do not turn on this feature.

You can find a list of all available alerts for your device in what you get with a Nest Aware subscription article.

Here are the steps to change detection settings:

1. Open the Google Home app. Google Home app.
2. Tap Favorites or Devices.
3. Tap and hold your device's tile, then More, then Menu, and finally Settings.
4. Tap Event.

Also, with your Nest Aware subscription, you can set up Activity Zone detection to get notifications about motion in certain areas, like a pathway or door.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Byron

No, I have all my zones set and what I want them to detect. It has been working completely fine since I installed it in January. I mean I am literally standing in front of it waving and it doesn’t detect anything. I have to press the doorbell and then it will kick in. Up until this week/late last week, I have gotten all of the notifications that I set up…people, packages, etc in the zones that I set up when it was installed.

Hi tkbartz,

Thank you for your reply.

I just want to confirm if "Do not disturb" and "Airplane mode" features are not enabled on your device. Additionally, verify that the "when to send" settings are configured as follows:

For the Google Home app, check if Away-only notifications are disabled.

  • For the Nest app:
    • For Android users, check if Only when no one’s home is On under When.
    • For iOS users, check When to Send is set to Always.

In the mean time, I would like to verify if the event was recorded. Please do the following:

On the Google Home app:

  1. Tap Activity, then Filter.
  2. From there, please filter for a specific device or event type that was not detected (time).
  3. Tap Show results.

Please keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Byron
