Nest Cameras (Wired) Indoor and Outdoor, Google Home Web App, April 8, 2024 Transition Date

It was challenging to choose appropriate labels for this post.  Let me begin by stating that I have a security alarm system with ADT, so I guess I will not be affected by Google terminating support for Nest Secure as I assume my ADT contract is its equivalent.  I do not own any "Drop Cams" so I guess I need not be concerned with that, either.  The only Nest products I own are some Nest Cameras which are wired.  I have not installed all of them as of this writing.  I notice that when I log onto Google Home via my Web Browser it brings up live footage for the two outdoor wired cameras I have installed.  At this time it does not have nearly the features of the original Nest website.  The "public preview" says they are working to improve the program - I hope so.  Since both my camera live feeds appear on the web browser site, I assume that when I migrated my Nest Cameras to Google, I do not need to concern myself with that.  I migrated my cameras to Google quite some time ago.  I have the Google Home App on my Google Pixel 6 Pro phone.  Now, I feel that the online information about Google's termination of a host of Google products / services is lacking in specificity.  So, it would be appreciated if some focused information about precisely which products / services will "remain supported" - that's right - "remain supported" after April 8, 2024.  For example, how about Nest wired cameras (indoor / outdoor - mine were acquired in November of 2018)?  The Nest "Aware" video recording service subscription?  These two items are what I am most seriously concerned with.  My guess is that ADT might be more than willing to support my cameras and subscription video recording service, but I do not want to go there unless I absolutely have to.  I am willing to give Google a chance.  It is my most sincere hope that you ladies and gentlemen at Google will take the time to present "exactly" which products / services will remain supported after April 8, 2024 and whether they will be accessible though the Google Home App on both phone and PC and I also hope you offer the same suite of operating options that the present Nest website offers for recording / saving clips of video, etc.  Thank you for listening.

When you get back to it, you might be able to tell which subscription you have by looking at the pricing page (https://store.google.com/product/nest_aware?hl=en-US&modal=upgrade-pricing).

Or you might be able to tell from the Subscription Management page (you need to be logged into Google in your browser): https://store.google.com/subscriptions

There is another subscription page that I cannot access, which works only for customers with 1st gen subscriptions.

1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions are per camera, and Google Nest says this: "As of July 13, 2023, Google will no longer sell new subscriptions of 1st gen Nest Aware. Any 1st gen subscriptions that you currently have will continue to renew." (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9233159)

On that same Help page, you could try the "Contact us" link under "Nest Aware Premier Care" to "Get 24/7 access to Nest Aware Experts on the Nest Customer Care team. They’re available to answer questions, help you access features, and manage your subscription."

I'm just another Google Nest customer, but here are a few comments, since I haven't seen any statement from Google Nest that would answer all of your questions:

You've actually migrated from a Nest Account to a Google Account; as a result, your 1st gen cameras and doorbells can now be viewed in the Google Home app and on the home.google.com website. Google Nest is working on additional functionality for the website, but for now (and since it went live in "Public Preview" status in October 2022) it only livestreams.

In the beta "Public Preview" version of the Google Home app, it is now possible to try out "transferring" 1st gen indoor and outdoor cameras (but NOT doorbells or IQ cameras) to this beta version of the Google Home app (https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/Nest-Cam-Outdoor-1st-gen-expanded-support-rolling-out-in...).

We are NOT using the beta "Public Preview" version of the Google Home app because we still cannot transfer doorbells, and even if we could, the Google Home app still lacks many Nest app functions (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/13038234#zippy=%2Cnest-app-only-features) and the home.google.com website still does not have the capabilities of the home.nest.com website.

We have 1st gen Google Nest cameras and doorbells; they will still be supported in the Google Nest app after April 8.

We have a "Nest Aware Plus" subscription that covers all of our 1st gen and 2nd gen cameras and doorbells; Nest Aware subscriptions will still be supported after April 8. 1st gen subscriptions are also supported, but you cannot buy new 1st gen subscriptions any longer (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9233159).

I don't know the timetable for any upcoming developments.

Thank you for the informative response.  I read the online information about new 1st gen subscriptions.  I still have three cameras that I have not installed, two outdoor and one indoor.  Due to recent events in my neighborhood, I am thinking of installing another outdoor camera.  I will plan to hire an electrician to drill through walls, etc., so I can plug it in indoors.  So, I will not be interested in setting up a third camera, or maybe more, if they cannot be "added onto" my present subscription.  If Google cannot do this, then I guess I will have no choice but to contact ADT and see what they have to say.  Your thoughts are appreciated.

@Escalante101

It depends on which Nest Aware subscription you have. If you have the 2nd gen "Nest Aware" or "Nest Aware Plus" subscription (available since 2020), those subscriptions automatically cover ALL 1st and 2nd gen cameras and doorbells in the same Google Nest "home/structure".

Our "Nest Aware Plus" subscription covers all of our 1st gen cameras and doorbells (installed the Google Nest app) and our two 2nd gen cameras (installed in the Google Home app), though we have to use 2 apps to view video history.

The 1st gen subscriptions cover individual cameras, and cannot be added to. See this pricing page:

Okay, I will keep this information as a bookmarked site.  My cameras are first generation.  I guess I will have to contact someone at Google to see if they will allow me to add to the subscription.  I already have two cameras on my subscription, so I cannot see why they would not allow more . . .  I am not sure of which "subscription" I have.  On the App at the top is has a "+ Add Device" and then "Choose a Device" which allows for adding Nest devices, etc.  Anyway, I will see what I can find out.  Thank you again.  I am dealing with troublesome allergy symptoms at the moment, so need to take a break.

Thank you so much for your help @MplsCustomer we thank you for actively participating in our community.  I've seen that you share good information and the correct troubleshooting steps for @Escalante101. Here is additional information about cameras shooting down

If any further help is needed, please don't hesitate to let us know.

I checked my subscription plan.  I have Nest Aware Plus with 60 days of backup and 10 days of video playback access.  I did not check my Google payments / subscription folder to ascertain my payments, but I believe it is on an auto pay plan which may entail a discount.  My next step will be to call Google Support on this matter.  I will also check with ADT, my home security service to determine their offerings.  Part of this situation is a little thing known as "customer service".  I have a feeling Google Nest Aware Plus will come through, although I could be wrong.

Hi everyone,

@Escalante101, thanks for posting here in Community.For Nest Aware Plus, there are two billing options: a monthly payment of $15 or an annual charge of $150. The annual charge is a better value, as it saves you $30 compared to paying monthly. The Nest Aware Basic and Nest Aware Plus services will continue to be maintained and supported after April 8, 2024. You can explore our newest features for Google Nest Camera through the Google Home web application. Be sure to take a look!

Thanks for the help, @MplsCustomer

Cheers,
Edmond

Hi,

Is there any clarification on whether the Nest gen 1 cameras and door bell will continue to work as usual?  There seems to be alot of different information on the internet.

I have two Nest gen 1 cameras currently connected, (own 3 total), along with the Nest doorbell (not sure what generation it is) and the Nest thermostat. They all currently are working as of today.  I also have the Nest Aware 5-day video subscription for the 2 cameras and doorbell and are all still working fine.  I had a 3rd camera that we took down, but I would like to reinstall, but now I am not sure  if I can add it back into my current Nest Aware subscription. Do you have any information on whether I can add my 3rd camera back into my exsisting Nest Aware subscription plan?  I did not  migrate to google and kept my original Nest app, which I use daily.

Any information you can share about the Nest gen 1 cameras , doorbell and thermostat contining to work long after April 8th 2024 would be very helpful.

Thank you,

MustangM

@MustangM

The only thing that changed on April 8, 2024 was that Google Nest quit supporting Dropcams and the Nest Secure alarm system:

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/An-update-for-our-Nest-Secure-Dropcam-and-Works-with-Nes...

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Blog/Final-Reminder-Support-for-Dropcam-Dropcam-Pro-and-Nest-...

Information on the internet to the contrary seems to be stuff that people just make up and post.

We have several 1st gen Google Nest cameras and doorbells, and nothing has changed for them.

I think you may NOT be able to add back a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription for your third camera; Google Nest says:

"Note: As of July 13, 2023, Google will no longer sell new subscriptions of 1st gen Nest Aware. Any 1st gen subscriptions that you currently have will continue to renew."

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9233159

But you could try the "Contact us" link under "Nest Aware Premier Care" on that same page to "Get 24/7 access to Nest Aware Experts on the Nest Customer Care team. They’re available to answer questions, help you access features, and manage your subscription."

We migrated our Nest Account to a Google Account in 2020 because the "Nest Aware Plus" subscription plan was cheaper than the 1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions, and we still use the Google Nest app every day.

Thank you for all of your great information regarding the camera's etc. There is clearly a lot of false information being put out on the internet.

When migrating first became available for the Nest to Google , it sounded like there were some customers stating that they had problems with the migration at first and complained that they were having recording/playback issues, or other problems and felt that it didn't run as smoothly as their previous Nest app.  I am assuming those issues got resolved, but I hesitated to migrate to Google Nest and never did.  My Nest app continues to offer me to migrate, so maybe it is time to do so, although I am still apprehensive. I will take your suggestion and contact  the Nest Aware Experts to see what I can find out about possibly adding back in our 3rd camera if we change our subscription plan or what they can offer me.  I am sure that the Premier Care is more expensive that what we currently have now with our Nest Aware subscription for our 2 camera's and Nest doorbell, but I will see what they can offer me since we are considering reinstalling our 3rd camera.

Thanks again!

@MustangM

You can see the pricing for all of the subscription plans here:

https://store.google.com/product/nest_aware?hl=en-US&modal=upgrade-pricing

I forgot to ask, after you migrated to Google in 2020 has everything with your cameras, recordings, the app, etc. worked the same as prior to migrating? Does it operate similar to the Nest app or are there any major changes to the Google nest app after you migrate? I am able to access my Nest app on my phone at anytime from anywhere, I am assuming it is the same with the Google Nest app? Even though I am sure this is all old news as I am pretty late to the game, but any other information you could provide about migrating to Google Nest and changes I might expect would be appreciated.

Thank you.

@MustangM

We saw very little change, but then we only had 1st gen cameras and doorbells then. We continued using the Google Nest app, and still do. Today, however, we now have much more access to our 1st gen cameras and doorbells in the Google Home app.

And I think Google Nest will eventually move everything to the Google Home app. In the beta "Public Preview" version of the Google Home app, you can now try out "transferring" 1st gen indoor and outdoor cameras to that version (but NOT doorbells or IQ cameras). We're not using that beta version because it still lacks so many Nest app features.

I would encourage you to review the Help topic below before migrating. Note that you cannot migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account that is already being used for other Google Nest devices (like Nest Hubs or Nest Minis). If that is the case, there is a workaround that is spelled out,
