Nest activity sensor revisited

I see that some members have recently read my old thread from last April, “Motion sensitivity”, that was since locked.  I realized no ultimate resolution was posted, my bad.  So referencing the locked thread:

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Aware/Motion-sensitivity/m-p/146495/emcs_t/S2h8ZW1haWx8Z...

…the answer to the problem, as best as I can remember or find in my email exchanges, was to turn off/remove all Activity Zones altogether.   Activities are still reported via notifications, just not specific to any delineated area in the camera’s view.  We can live with that.  At least moths, spiders, and passing car headlights on the street don’t get incessantly reported anymore.    Packages in place and people, familiar and not, are usually reported.  I say “usually” because there’s been a couple of times a package was left but it’s not in the history.  I assume rare and brief WiFi or Nest system outages were just coincidental to those events.

My only other gripe, not necessarily related to the activity zone issue, is likely more a consequence of our 50/50mbps internet that’s otherwise been adequate for streaming and other activities.  Still annoying is that by the time I get an event notification, grab a device, and wait many long seconds for the Nest app to spool up, and then render a current screen, whoever was at the door has often given up and left.  I don’t leave the Nest app, and most others, open in the iPad or Android phone background because of the power it uses, unneeded 95% of the time.

Hi Hafcanadian,

We appreciate you getting back to us and taking your time posting here your concerns, thoughts and ideas. I know where you're coming from when sometimes things aren't supposed to work the way they should. With regards to the motion sensitivity issue, you may find it to your Google Home app.

Give these steps a try:

  • Open your Google Home app> select your Nest Camera.
  • Go to settings> video.
  • Tap wake—up sensitivity> then choose your desired sensitivity.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Emerson

Hey there,

I just wanted to follow up to see if you still need our help. Please let us know as we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

I appreciate the help, Emerson.

Thanks,

Archie

I do not have the Google Home app on our iPads, but do have the Nest app.  When I initially installed the camera I had a devil of a time because the Nest function and the Google function weren't talking to each other, and had to have separate log-ins.  Subsequent to that, Google tried to mesh them better, but the process was infuriating.  Not being a cyberphile, I by hook or by crook somehow eventually managed to get them on the same page.  But it soured me on the whole process of trying to network stuff in the home.  My further endeavors in that regard halted as a result.

On our MacBook Pro I must go to Launchpad and open Google Chrome to get to our Nest camera, which can mean the visitor has given up and left before I get things loaded and can view the camera.  If I leave the Nest app open on our iPads or android phones, I can check who's there a little faster, but I normally try to close apps rather than have them using power in the background for hours or days.

I tried to use it on our 2019 Sony TV that has Google Home or Assistant built in, so we can see who's at the door and interrupted our program 😉 , but that proved even more difficult to get to.  My wife just gets mad and asks why I don't just go see who's at the door rather than mess with the TV or iPad.  I say, well, they're supposed to work better than this, and I keep trying.  To this day, after a couple of years or more, I've still to remember that once I get the camera up I can tap the mike and answer whoever's waiting... if they still are 🙂 .  Still learning.

As to the instructions from Ebedia, on my iPad Pro I don't have Google Home, but opened the Nest app.  Under Settings at the bottom I opened the front door Camera, but nowhere there including under the "Video" section can I find a "wake-up sensitivity" option.

As previously noted, I alleviated my prior issues with aberrant triggers by eliminating all "Activity Zones" altogether.
