Android 12 broke manually setting Digital (AC3) audio

Like a month ago my 4K chromecast got updated to Android 12 and that reverted my manual audio settings back to automatic which breaks surround sound for my setup but even if i set it back to manual & choose the correct audio codecs nothing improves because this update has somehow broken the ability to manually send Dolby Digital (AC3) audio from Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3) streams.

So now my TV only receives PCM from the chromecast because that is all that chromecast gives my TV if i only select "Dolby Digital" in the manual settings

**manually selecting "Dolby Digital Plus" is a special case, If I chose that codec before the update to Android 12 and played a video that had EAC3 audio, I wouldn't get any audio out of my receiver cause my TV can't extract AC3 from EAC3 & EAC3 can't be sent over SPDIF, well all of that is still true today which suggests manualy selecting Dolby Digital Plus actually does *something* meaningful but manully setting just normal Dolby Digital instead currently does *nothing*.

If I use the few remaining working apps that are internal to my TV I'm able to send doby digital (AC3) audio to my receiver over SPDIF without any issues so my setup is *not* the problem.

Furthermore I bought a HDMI & Arc extractor which breaks HDMI-CEC between sources & my TV it also has other deal breaking problems but it *does* extract AC3 from EAC3 & passes the AC3 over SPDIF to my receiver but i want to return it for all the ways it doesn't work well.

Please fix this audio bug caused by the Android 12 update

Hi PissedOff4kCct,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear about that. Please unplug the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and plug it back in on the same HDMI port on your TV, then test.

Plugging it on a different HDMI port on the TV or different TV screen if one is available might also help. If the issue persists, reset your device and let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Jennifer

I tried the 4k Chromecast on different hdmi ports, port 1 was the original port it was on & then i tried it through an hdmi switch connected to port 2 on my tv.

In either case i get the same symptom fron manually setting Dolby Digital (AC3) in the audio settings which does NO LONGER result in the chromecast extracting legacy Dolby Digital (AC3) audio from Dolby Digital Plus (EAC3) audio sources as of Android 12 however this worked perfectly in Android 10

I'm not the only one reporting this exact issue

Hello there,

Yikes! To confirm, have you tried resetting your Chromecast with Google TV? If you haven't yet, please try that and keep me posted.

Thanks,

Jennifer

By reset do you mean powercycle? If so yes I have powercycled & i can do so again.

Hey PissedOff4kCct,

Thanks for getting back to us.

No. Resetting the device means clearing the data on your device. It will go back to its default factory settings. You can follow the steps here on how to reset your device.

Thanks,

Jennifer

No i haven't performed a factory reset, & i would not be willing to do so unless i knew with all certainty that it WOULD fix the issue not merely "could" "conceivably" fix this issue.

I just don't see a factory reset fixing the problem unless the Chromecast OS is reverted to Pre-Android 12, which just means the issue comes back when the chromecast auto updates to Android 12 again.

Hello PissedOff4kCct,

I understand that this step is a little out of your way, but resetting your device to default settings is the next best step. Give it a try!

Thanks,

Jennifer
