Changing WiFi for Hotel Use

Chromecast with Google TV (4K)- How To Change WiFi?

So I’m now using a new 4K device for hotel travel. I’ve set it up at home with my apps and sources and I’m impressed. I’m concerned that it appears that I have to do a factory reset in each hotel with a new setup to get it and my iPhone on the same network just to watch shows in the room. Is there a way to just get it on the hotel network like my phone or am I overthinking?

When you go somewhere, go to the settings in the Chromecast and change the network from there.

Hi KlayAnderson,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand your concern. You don't need to do a factory reset to change the Wi-Fi network on your Chromecast with Google TV. Here are the steps on how to do it:

  1. Make sure that your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your Chromecast.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Tap the device you want to change the Wi-Fi network for.
  4. Tap the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  5. Tap Wi-Fi.
  6. Tap Forget this network.
  7. Follow the steps to set up your Chromecast with Google TV on a new network.

I would like to suggest a different option that will make your traveling a lot easier if you are doing this often.

Get a Travel Router (about $30).  They connect to the hotel network and then make their own secure network that you connect all you other devices to.

Then, while you are home, setup your Chromecast, your phone, and all the other devices that you travel with so they know and use the Travel Router's network (you set the network name and it will always be the same whenever you use that router).   When you get to the hotel, set your Travel Router up and all your devices will see the network that they know and connect automatically.

Not only is that faster, but it is also SAFER.  Your personal network is controlled and encrypted.  Nobody else in the hotel can see your devices.

It goes like this:   (hotel wifi network: ie "HiltonWiFi") -> Travel Router -> (personal wifi network: ie "KlayTravelNetwork") -> All of your devices

That's what I do.   Then, it doesn't mater where I am.  My phone, Chromecast, tablet, laptop, and Chromebook all know my travel router's network and connect to it

One thing to keep in mind, Chromecast devices can only remember ONE network at a time.  So, you will have Cal26's steps to set/reset when you travel and when you go back home.

If you travel A LOT, you may want to consider getting a second Chromecast device.  That way you don't have to keep setting the network and it saves wear-and-tear on the cable and HDMI ports on your home TV.

Thank you. The difficult part is using the Google remote and interface to go through the hotels captive portal. But I did get it to work tonight. Thank you for all your help.
