ChromeCast loses WiFi password and must be restarted

MikeinSCZ
Community Member

A recurring problem:

ChromeCast loses the WiFi password (or so it says). It always resolves with a restart. This generally happens once every few days.

I am able to reset the device remotely by removing and adding via the app… etc. a real bother.

But best solution is a simple restart of the device. This always works.

I just don’t know how to solve the root cause.

The WiFi router is a Nest. 3 feet away. No other device has connectivity issues.

If i elect to “add” the device. The Chromecast Ultra is found (via Bluetooth) but it can not connect to WiFi… it sees the network but fails to connect with password.

A simple restart of device via plug / unplug will resolve with no other actions.

It would be nice if I could remotely reboot the device via Bluetooth connection.

Well, my answer may not be specific to this question but you can try. In other devices, if wifi has such issues then we use the "forget" option to completely remove the stored name and password. Then, we freshly configure with the user and password. You may try it as well.

Something equal here. The Chromecast w ATV Hd loss internet connection, most times when it is in idle mode. No chance to connect manually in settings. Hangs on "getting IP Adress". Device Restart always solves problem.

Agreed. It only occurs in idle mode. It should be an easy issue to solve if Google/Nest wanted to give it priority.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the suggestion, AK_Sinha.

MikeinSCZ and dirkberlin, I'm sorry to hear that you're having a connectivity issue with your Chromecast devices. Let's sort this out.

A few questions: did you observe the LED status on your Chromecast when it disconnects to your network? How far is it from the Wi-Fi router? Are there any changes in your Wi-Fi network? Please try to reboot your Wi-Fi router and plug in the Chromecast into a different HDMI port on your TV. Performing a factory reset on your device might also help. Here's a guide: How to factory reset your Chromecast.

Regards,

Jennifer

3 meters in same room. No other device have any problem with the wifi, factory reset of CCwGTV does not solve anything. I will try to check the led, but the device is behind the tv. Never noted anything else then a white LED state.

Same. No status indicated. 1 meter from router. Occurs only in idle (so likely why not found testing). Factory rest has no impact. Randomly occurs but sometimes randomly resolves (Once or twice a week). Changed HDMI ports more than once. Its clearly a FW issue.

Annother Day, and after 3 Hour after power on I checked the cc and the wifi is lost. the LED is pulsing. the stick is not able to reconnect after pressing on/off on remote or to choose a other wifi.

need newer fw or rma

Hello there,

Thanks for getting back to us. To isolate the issue, could you please connect your Chromecast devices to a mobile hotspot and observe if the connection will still drop?

Best,

Jennifer

Mobile Hotspot or will another wifi router serve that same purpose?

Hi MikeinSCZ,

Yes. We're only trying to connect to these networks for us to check if the issue is with the Chromecast or the network it's currently connected to.

Thanks,

Jennifer
