Chromecast 1080i resolution

Bill44053
Community Member

I have had this device for two years using it on an old tv that supports a maximum 1080i resolution. On 8/12/23, this resolution seems to be no longer available. I do notice an app called TV Setup was just installed. I uninstalled this and even did a factory reset but still cannot get 1080i resolution. Any help?

Hi Bill44053,

Thanks for posting and for being a step ahead of us. Since all of the steps you tried didn’t help, we may need to identify if the TV itself is not capable of working with your Chromecast device. A few questions: what Chromecast device are you using? What is the make and model of this TV? Is the Chromecast device connected directly to the HDMI port of this TV? If not, are you using some kind of converter (HDMI to USB, receiver to TV, etc.)?

Here are some things that you can try:

  • Move to a different HDMI port on the TV.
  • If you’re using a converter, try an alternative and test it.
  • Test it on another TV to isolate it.
  • If it worked on another TV, use the Chromecast Voice remote and go to Settings > Display and Sound > Resolution (1080p, 720p, etc.) to choose the option that might work on your TV. You can then test it back on your TV to see if it can still load it.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi Kimy,

My Chromecast with Google TV (4K) – Snow is model number GA01919-US. I purchased it just under two years ago and have been using it without a problem until 8/12/23 with a very old TV without HDMI connections. I achieved this by using a HDMI to component video (YpbPr) converter. This old TV has a maximum resolution of 1080i. I know the old TV, the port I connect to, and the converter are all working properly because I can connect my cable tv box with it set for 1080i and it works beautifully. However, the chromecast which I specifically purchased because it supported 1080i no longer does. I have looked at the resolution settings and 1080i is no longer available. I do believe that a software update, perhaps TV Setup, caused the problem. If this cannot be resolved I will never purchase a Google product or service again.

Thanks,

Bill44053

Hello Bill44053,

I understand. I’m sorry to hear that this doesn’t seem to be easy on you. If you can test it on another TV to see if it’s still functional, we can prove that your Chromecast device is working as intended. Now, if you can adjust it to 720p and see if it would work on your current TV, then it’s a better workaround. Let us know if you manage to try it.

Regards,

Kimy

I don't have another TV that supports 1080i to test it on but I do know the old TV and converter absolutely do work with a device that can be set to 1080i resolution (ie, my cable box). The chromecast does work just fine on my modern TV, though that TV does not support 1080i and that option isn't offered. The resolution options on the chromecast will show many resolution and Hz options on that modern TV. The old TV only supports 480p, 480i, and 1080i, and I used the chromecast on it, set for 1080i, for just about two years. Suddenly, on 8/12/23, after a software update, the chromecast no longer supported 1080i. A software update took away functionality that I specifically bought the product for. I think Google needs to fix this.

Hi there,

We hear you, @Bill44053. Right now, your Chromecast device is working as intended since it works on your modern TV. Chances are, your TV may not be compatible anymore. I suggest you send feedback. It may not be guaranteed to be implemented, but Google values customer feedback.

Thanks,

Kimy

I will never purchase a Google product again, How dare you program functionality out of a product. My TV didn't change, the chromecast changed. A big middle finger to Google. Who do I send feedback to?

Hello Bill44053,

We understand you, and we’re sorry about this. This is not the experience that we want you to have. Technology is an ever-changing phase. One way or another, an old device will become obsolete. A smartphone model released this year may not be relevant anymore after 10 years, just like a smartphone model released 10 years ago. This also applies to TV models. The Chromecast device, just like other devices, would require an update that would work in unison with compatible TVs. If these TVs don’t update to the current (or at least close to the current), eventually they will be left behind. That’s how technology works.

You can send feedback on your Chromecast with Google TV via Settings > Help and Feedback. Your Chromecast device is working as intended, but not on this TV. If you have questions in the future, feel free to create a new one.

Sincerely,

Kimy

I will leave feedback but, again, Google updated the product, not me. I bought this device specifically because it supported 1080i and your software developers took this feature away. I have purchased many technology products over the years, more than you I'm sure, and have never seen this happen before. They may not continue supporting a product like not offering bug fixes or answering technical support questions but they don't send an update that takes away a feature. I will never purchase a Google product again.

I know more about the chromecast device than you do.

Since recently I cannot choose a better resolution on my chromecast 4k than 1080p60hz on my 3K monitor. Before summer I could. Was this part of the same "update"/"downgrade of the software?

(By the way..I can still choose a better resolution in the youtube-app on my chromecast, but not in the settings menu - and hence cannot get better resolution than 1080p on netflix and other apps)

Hi MC77,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. Kindly create a new thread with these details under a different title. It would help other users who are experiencing the same concern share their thoughts, and at the same time, it would help gather feeds from other users who have answers for this.

Thanks,

I experienced a similar problem as Bill, that’s why I posted here.

Kimy , if you know something about recent updates affecting me and Bill it would be very helpful if you could be specific.

Hi MC77,

Thanks for the reply. So does that mean that your TV has no HDMI ports (which can be switched for isolation) and you are using a converter (i.e., USB to HDMI, RCA to HDMI, etc.) to force the Chromecast with Google TV to result in an output on this particular TV model? If not, then it could be related to the threads: Resolution setting disappeared or How do I set output resolution fixed for what old TV can show?

If it’s still not related or the steps from those threads didn’t help, kindly create a new thread so other users (including me) can help.

Sincerely,

Kimy
