Chromecast with Google TV 4k: "Camera feed is not available" for Nest Cam (wired) and Nest Doorbell

ColinGuy
Community Member

Edit: 02/23/2023 - Confirmed working on both of my devices. Thank you so much for the attention to this issue!!

When I attempt to see my Nest Doorbell (battery) or my Nest Cam (Wired) on my 4k Chromecast with Google TV, I receive a message on the TV "Camera feed is not available".

I just received the Chromecast at my house today (Feb 6th, 2023). It is running Android TV OS Version 12, Android TV OS security patch level July 1, 2022. Kernel Version: 4.9.269, Android TV OS build: STTE.220621.019.A2.9082754.
My Nest Cam (Wired) is on software version spencer-user 1.65 OPENMASTER 326080 release-keys.
My Nest Doorbell (battery) is on software version gq-user 1.65 OPENMASTER 326080 release-keys
I have a fibre connection to my house and it is a small house with no connection issues to any device.
Since receiving the chromecast I added it to my Home. After this error I removed all three devices from my home, re-added the chromecast first, followed by the Nest cam and then the doorbell. Problem persists. I then tried a different WIFI connection and went from my Bell router to my Google Wifi. Problem persists.

I then removed all items from my Home and unlinked all accounts. I made a new home and re-added the chromecast followed by the cameras. Problem persists. In between each of these steps I am factory resetting each device everytime. With this new home set-up I tried a different WIFI again, problem persists. I tried adding the cameras first and then the chromecast. Problem persists.

I ensured my NEST account is the same as my google account and matches my home. Everything is all on the same google account. I removed everything from my Nest account and removed the home again and the address. I re-added Nest first, then the google home and re-added the items after a factory reset. Problem persists.

Just a note, I can ask my Nest Hub to show me either camera and it works and displays correctly. An odd thing though is that if I ask my phone to show me either camera on my hub (Rather than asking the hub itself) my phone tells me "sorry it looks like cam doesn't support streaming to remote screens".

Another oddity I discovered in my troubleshooting is that if I am in the Home app, and I hit the letter at the top right, then go to "assistant settings" and then choose "Devices" the chrome cast always shows up twice AND when you click either of them the screen flashes and it does NOT take you to the chromecast settings (whereas if I touch any of my other devices like my hubs or speakers, it brings me right to the Settings screen for that item in the Home app).

Devices factory reset ten seperate times in my troubleshooting. Renamed devices, 3 different wifi's, 2 different homes including starting from scratch for every item I own by removing and unlinking every account I had attached to home and making a new home. Same with my Nest profile.

Problem persists.

I read the blog post from July 27, 2022 telling me that I can do exactly what isn't working, so someone please tell me what I'm missing. Frankly, the fact that I am having this much trouble with such a simple task is embarrassing for a company as large as google.

Edit (Feb 9th, 2023): I spent another day troubleshooting. I have previously had another google account, so yesterday I spent the time removing every association between me and that other account and finished by erasing that google account. I then went through the process of again erasing and unlinking everything, factory resetting every device and deleting my home. I started from scratch and ensured again that I only used the one google account to add every device onto the same wifi. I started with the Chromecast again, followed by a nest cam. It asked if I had set-up another NEST device yet which I hadn't so it said it would make a new Nest network ( i was very hopeful at this point), unfortunately, this did not resolve the problem.

I came across a reddit post talking about 'ghost' devices in assistant which I had on my wifes google account and the double chromecast issue on my own. So I went through and got an old google home app to try and remove remnants of these devices, this also did not work and did nothing to remove the duplicate chromecasts in my assistant settings. Problem persists.

Just got a Nest cam (battery) in birthday gift. My Google TV dongle cannot show it.

"Cant show camera feed"

Works fine on Google Home...

I have a second generation indoor wired nest camera.  I am trying to stream this on a TV with an HD Chromecast Google tv.  The feed starts fine, however shortly after the screen flickers (fraction of a second black screen as it tries to refresh the image), starts freezing, then finally completely cuts out.  The Google Wifi router is no more than 15 feet (of open space) away.  This seems to work fine on a Nest Hub or on my phone via the Google Home app, but this chromecast isn't working properly.  When I play YouTube or other video it works fine.

As a final side note, I don't know the back end workings of how it displays the video, I just say "Hey Google, display <camera name>".

@Googletv Please help.  I've already called in multiple times, and spent 2.5hrs on the last call alone.  The goal is to display the camera continuously on this tv.  The TV, camera, and chromecast were purchased for ONLY this reason.

@google

So after reaching into my existing stock pile of devices, I decided to try another chromecast w/google tv and camera.

Here are my findings:

Using an alternate chromecast w/google tv yielded the same glitchy results.

My only options for cameras were all 1st gen outdoor wired.  I plugged it in, added it to the location in question.  VOILA.  No issues.

Conclusion:  There is a code issue with the 2nd gen wired camera when streaming to a chromecast.  The 1st gen wired outdoor camera works perfectly.

As you can see from the thread you aren't the only one having issues. You would think the Google engineers are aware of the problem. I have been following this thread for a year. Same issued with the battery powered camera.

Shows good on Nest Hub and phone, but not chromecast

Super disappointing conversation with google support.  I'm glad I found a solution for myself, but for a customer that has been with all the google devices since they pretty much came out, they weren't very helpful.  I easily have over 20 devices running, customer loyalty doesn't seem to mean a thing...

After I read your post I went back to Google to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Started here -

Then re-direct to here -

I'm not on the same network as I am at work, but will go over everything again when I get home.
It will probably be the same result. Google usually would fix a problem like this. Not sure why it hasn't been addressed as a fix.
Maybe it has been, so that's why I will check my installation.

Good Luck

It has not been fixed yet but it does not hurt to double check.

According to the support pages it looks like it works....eazzzy peazzy! I still think that Google will eventually fix this.

How do we escalate this? Obviously, we have enough folks here reporting the same issue. I think we should all go to this page and report the issue. That might trigger someone to have a look at this.

We should all call support simultaneously everyday untill they fix it!

lol, I submitted feedback via the link I shared with you and it was pretty easy to do. I think it is our best choice but I will look into any other avail able options. I also made a reference to this community discussion. For those who have not given up on Google Nest Cams yet, please go ahead and submit your feedback and add a link to this discussion. The least I expect from Google is to take down their documentation that outlines the instructions on how to get this to work.

I am facing the same issue, tried casting my New Nest Cameras on my Sony TV, but it only shows offline symbol. Cameras are plugged in and working fine in Google Home.

Where’s the fix and how to get it?

When I ask Google to stream my best camera (battery) to my Google TV I can a a gray screen and a white camera icon with line through it. If I ask to do it to my best hub max it works. Image

Same issue here, April 2024. Frustration.

@JenniferVIs there any progress on this? How can this issue be ignored when so many users have reported it?

@ABG   It's being ignore and it's clearly an issue. I heard plugging a chromecast dongle on your tv will work but not integrated chromecast TVs. They didn't anticipate customers using their tv as a screen for the nest doorbell? It's ridiculous!  it looks to me they want to sale those small dedicated nest google screens for that and their are purposely blocking us to get that option. I'm not buying a chromecast nor a google screen, I've already paid for it buying my new google tv. @JenniferV

I have one TV with Google chromecast dongle and Sony TV with built in Google TV. Both doesn’t display vide from doorbell camera. Only works on Google hub display

Ok. I've heard it worked but didn't tried it. Thanks for letting me know.

I have this issue as well. My camera that is configured in the Nest app works but my outdoor cameras that are configured in Google Home give me the gray screen with the broken camera icon. Seems like it could be related to the cameras not in the Nest app?

I have issues with Google video doorbell. When I tried Eufy doorbell it works with voice assistant (Google). Google won’t fix issue to watch on Google TV as they need to sell their own Google Hub displays.  It’s monopoly

@JenniferV

This is another evidence that this issue persists. How come Google is not taking any action on this? It has been over 14 months since the community kept reporting this issue.  Below is the article from Google that indicates this is supposed to work.

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express concern regarding multiple unresolved complaints that have been posted by users on the Google Nest Community forum. Despite repeated attempts to seek assistance, there has been a noticeable lack of response from the support team.

As customers who rely on your products for our daily needs, prompt and effective support is crucial. The issue at hand, specifically the “Camera feed is not available” error on the Chromecast with Google TV 4K, has been a recurring topic within the community. This problem significantly impacts the functionality and user experience of the device.

We understand that the support team handles a large volume of inquiries and that each case requires attention to detail. However, the community feels overlooked when issues persist without acknowledgment or guidance. Timely communication is essential, and even a brief update on the status of these complaints would be greatly appreciated by all affected users.

You know, I have to agree with ABG. I think his message was well thought out.

I have been buying into the Google platform for a long time now and for the most part enjoying their product use. Hardware is well made and usually functions seamlessly, but over the years with app deprecations and now this debacle with cameras and doorbells not integrating without so much as simple response for Google, I feel that it may be time to look elsewhere as others have done. Just recently, Samsung has notified users that they will no longer support (some) Google devices on the Samsung TV's. It's like you buy products and because the 2 giants can't agree on how to integrate, we are left with less than useful devices. At least inform us what is going on. It erodes consumer confidence.

Hisense 4k tv and a current generation Google nest outdoor cam wired and wired doorbell. Both fail to show on the TV and shows grey icon. It’s an absolute joke that this is still an issue. Both products are running software made by Google but apparently you need to buy a camera made by Amazon or Ring in order to get this feature to function!!?

I just learnt that it will not work with built in Chromecast.. this was done intentionally by Google and will only allow it on external Chromecast Devices..

Only the old models of next can might workz but not the new ones

This issue is so nuts in that they just seem to not fix it.  Dissapointing.

Hi @JenniferV ,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to follow up on my previous inquiry regarding the "Camera feed is not available" issue on the Chromecast with Google TV 4k. I haven't received a response yet and wanted to bring to your attention that more users have reported the same issue recently, as seen in the community thread.

Your assistance in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

ABG

Okay, So I help this helps all on this thread regarding the resolution of this problem. I have a Samsung 2021 TV and I got a notice from Samsung that google products were removed from my TV a few months ago. I got an update and had to start using Bixby et al. I also use smart things, so I can control the rest of my devices through Smart Things, except of course the camera feeds from my google nest products.

It seems that there has been a falling out of sorts between Google and Samsung. It could be the same case between Google and other TV makers. I wouldn't doubt it - Google might have gotten greedy (my guess) and the TV makers told them to shove their interfacing where the Sun Don't Shine - I don't know, it's above my pay grade and probably above Jennifer V's too!

My TV came with Google, Alexa and Bixby installed (Google was the reason I bought it in the first place) but now I have only Bixby and Alexa. I bought the nest cam some time after that and it has never worked. I don't even pay that much attention to this thread anymore because i don't need the added stress, nut I thought I would let you all know what I have learned about the situation. I guess we are have to going to wait until Google starts making their own TV's before there is a permanent solution.

I didn't really know what deprecation was until I was deep within the world of Google. Good Luck everybody - Mic Drop.

?? Pointless speculation and also GOOGLE makes the software on these TVs which the TV makers are happy to use. GOOGLE is selling cameras that do not function with the software GOOGLE makes for tv brands.

Hi @JenniferV ,

I am following up on the "Camera feed is not available" issue with Chromecast with Google TV 4k. It seems more users are experiencing this problem, as mentioned by Link90 @Link90  in their recent post. They highlighted the importance of this issue being addressed promptly, given the growing number of affected users.

Could we please have an update on any progress or potential fixes?

Thank you for your assistance.
