Some Youtube videos freeze on Chromecast with Google TV 4K

I have two Chromecast with Google TV devices, one is the HD model and one is the 4K model.  The 4K model has a problem: some Youtube videos freeze, though only when the video itself has another video in it. For example, many of the late-night hosts, like Jimmy Kimmel, often show a video of something. So I'll be watching a Jimmy Kimmel video on Youtube, but when he shows a video of something, that video freezes. The sound continues but the video becomes a still image. All other streaming and Youtube videos (without a video in a video) seem to work fine.

I've tried clearing the Youtube cache, clearing the Youtube data, resetting the app, doing a factory reset of the Chromecast 4K device, moving the device to another TV, using a more powerful adapter, changing screen resolutions, turning off the energy saving setting for the app, and probably a few other things. The problem persists.

I do NOT have this problem on the Chromecast HD device. Only the 4K. Same network (5GHz, strong signal, fast), same TV, same everything. I've tried both devices on two TVs (actually, one is a Sony AV receiver hooked up to a projector) and the CCGTV 4K has the Youtube problem on both TVs while the HD does not. Last note: both TVs that I've tried are 1080p, not 4K. But I see that the Chromecast 4K uses that resolution and doesn't even offer 4K. I assume it knows that the TV is 1080p.

Any ideas?

P.S. The forum editor is making me choose iOS, Android, or web browser. It's not a casting problem, but rather a problem inherent in the CCGTV device, I believe.

Hi jkey,

Thanks for posting and for being a step ahead of us. Let’s try this approach. Disconnect your Chromecast with Google TV (4K) from Wi-Fi via Settings > Network and Internet. Connect it to your phone’s mobile hotspot. Observe if it persists. If it works well, disconnect it from the hotspot and reconnect it to your Wi-Fi. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Kimy

Interesting idea. It actually did work when I connected it to my phone hotspot (Pixel 6 Pro on Verizon), and then when I switched back to my house wifi. Then I moved it to our theater with a Sony AV receiver and projector. It didn't work on wifi. I couldn't test it with the hotspot because I don't have a cell signal there. Then I moved it back to the other TV. Fiddled with it because it wasn't working again on wifi and I couldn't get a decent cell signal to test the hotspot even though I had one (barely) before. I gave up.

Anyway, thanks for the suggesting. It was worth trying. Maybe there's something to it.

Hi there,

Thanks for the details. The objective of trying it on a mobile hotspot is to isolate possible network issues. Reconnecting it from the hotspot to Wi-Fi is to identify if the network issue can still be fixed. We achieved both. This now boils down to the network. Kindly contact your internet service provider or router manufacturer. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks again for the comments, but I don't think it's the network. In fact, testing it again with my phone as a hotspot gave the same results as on wifi. The first test must have been a fluke. Furthermore, the test video I'm using on Youtube (Al Franken showing a video of his White House Correspondents Dinner almost 30 years ago; it's the video within the video that freezes) works fine with on my CCGTV HD, on my Macbook Pro, on my Pixel 6 Pro, and with a Fire TV 4K stick. All on the same network. The only device where there's a problem is the CCGTV 4K.

Thanks for trying to help, but I guess I'll go back to the Fire TV stick.

It will be quicker and more satisfying to switch to a Fire TV stick than continue down this Google rabbit hole. Thanks anyway.

I am not going to pursue this. Yes, it's still a problem. But only with some Youtube videos and only on the CCGTV 4K. I'll work around it. So we're done here. Thanks.
