Wrong TIme in Chromecast 4K with Google TV,in Mexico City and elsewhere,NOT solved. (reported again)

Google:
On Sunday, 30 October 2022 the Mexican government decided to abolish Daylight Savings Time in most of Mexico (the country) except for a few locations.  When the day came that the time should have changed (move time one hour ahead), many of your devices in fact changed hour when they should have not ! ...  This is understandable as they probably had old internal time zone tables where DST time change was required.   In most of the devices that suffered the problem, an update with the new time zone tables was enough to fix the issue.

On your Chromecast 4K with Google TV devices, the problem IS Still there if it is configred to set the time automatically from the network.  Time gets set one hour ahead of the actual real time.  But the problem doesn't stop there.  Because of this, then the device can't connect to the configured Internet wireless link and everything becomes unusable.    This happens specially if there is a power failure and when everything comes back, nothing works.

This has been reported by many people in your forums and the solution to this problem has not been released.  This is a totally unresponsible  attitude from you, Google.   Why are you letting down your users and customers?

Many people, elders (as my 83 years old mum), depend on your gizmos to watch TV and entertain themselves, and devices and setup that should work flawlessly noe, they have become unreliable and useless because of your negligence of not releasing a firmware update with the bug fix for this Chromecast devices.   Not acceptable at all.

This should be a very easy fix and then a firmware update release.  Why are you not doing it ?

Let alone that , you also dare to close all discussions in the support forums that deal with this issue, despite that it's been reported since many months ago and there are no news from your part about a fix release... just excuses and apologies that take us nowhere.

Again, Google, please FIX your Chromecast devices that have a wrong time setup and management. Make sure time zones are correct according to the latest IANA time zone tables  (www.iana.org/time-zones) and of course, ensure that it works when time device is rebooted or reset.  Many, many people around the world would appreciate this.

Thanks in advance.  I look forward to  your comments on this matter.

Hey Dan:

Thanks for your comment and yoru offer.  Well, it happens that I own a Google Chromecast with Googlr TV 4K  model GA01919-US, its current firmware version is: STTE.230319.008.H1 (4K). (latest, as far as I know). Whenever I set the time to auto-update from the network AND the timezone as MEXICO CITY, then, the time get set wrong. One hour ahead of the actual real time in that city.  Let me state that DST was recently abolished in Mexico by the government so, there is no more DST (except for some very specific cities in Mexico, but certainly NOT in Mexico City).   If the device has the feature to set pretty much any time zone, and certainly "Mexico City's TZ is there", it should set the time correctly it is not doing that. So, the most obvious thing that must be happening is that the internal time zone tables of the device are not up to date with the published IANA Timezone Tables or Database:  https://www.iana.org/time-zones

What is even worse, if the power fails and the device gets rebooted, then since it is set to auto-update time and a wrong time gets set, it would not connect to the Internet and thus, it becomes absolutely useles.

One of the current users of that device is my 83 year old mum who likes watching shows from that time zone (Mexico City) so, that is why the device is set that way.  Every time the power fails or something happens that the time is incorrect and the device can't connect to the network,  the Chromecast becomes a heavy-useless-paper-wight.

I am asking Google to fix those tables and release a new firmware that maybe reads them from IANA, that way the Chromecast would always be up to date with changes in timezones and it will become  a useful device again.

We got several Chromecasts With Google TV and all of them are in the same situation.  ALso, there are many persons who are reporting exactly the same bad behavior with different timezones as they are currently on those devices.  SO, Google needs to fix this and release a new fixed firmware as soon as possible.

This has been around since, at least October 2022 for the timezones I am interested in , but many also report failures in time related settings since way before.

I appreciate your time and interest in this bug and hopefully through your intervention, it can be promptly solved and make all of us happy again with our Google devices.

Kind regards.

Felipe

FYI, this is also still an issue on GoogleTV at the end of August 2023. Maybe the various PMs of the jolly gaggle of Android rebadges (GoogleHome/Nest, Android, Chromecast, AndroidTV/GoogleTV, not sure if ChromeOS has this problem) could have a sit-down over some GooglePlex burritos and figure out why they've managed to blow off 100 million Mexicans (Android has a 78% market share here, Mexico has 128 million people) for 6 months. Are you just waiting until November when Mexican DST used to end? Then you'd only have just 5 more months to rollout tzdata updates until DST doesn't take effect again in April 2024.

It's almost as irresponsible as the CFE, the Mexican electricity monopoly which allows the aforementioned frequent power outages (which affect hospitals and traffic lights, on the same circuits as business and households, oops), or Telmex, the Mexican telecomm monopoly which left its broadband users with WEP's vulnerable broken encryption for 10 years(!) after it was deprecated. Mexicans are accustomed to ineptitude on the part of its institutions, but we were hoping for something better from Google. Thanks for your attention, please escalate this to your Project Manager already!

Sorry, I meant "Product Manager", of course. You know, the people who make sure the big picture of each product are... managed.

Hi folks,

Sorry for the late reply. Kindly check if you already received the late August to early September update. It includes patch fixes for most of the recognized bugs. If not, try to do a full clean-up by performing a factory reset and setting it up from scratch. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Kimy
