Different Response When Using Custom Commands

I have a mixture of Google speakers (3 x Nest Audios and 2 Nest Minis) and four displays (1 x Nest Hub Max, 2 x first generation Next Hubs and 1 x second generation Nest Hub). I have created a bedtime routine where the last action is a custom command with the following: Play channel 53 on Sirius XM on Bedroom Speakers [2 Nest Audios in stereo pair] for two hours. The Nest Audio and Minis correctly responds to the custom command and plays Sirius XM Chill on the bedroom speakers for two your. All of the displays give me an error saying, “Sorry, I can’t find any devices in your home that can play video. You might want to check the device settings in the Google Home app.”

I guess my question is an oblivious one: why do the speakers get it right but the displays are stuck on stupid?

Hello Koolybop,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum. We'd love to help.

Check if the custom commands are working on Google Nest Hub Max and Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) devices via voice commands first. If they are, you can then replicate them in your routines. You may also try rebooting your Google Nest displays to see if that will resolve the issue.

Keep me posted.

Cheers,
Lovely

LovelyM,

Thanks for replying to my post.  I have deleted every device from my account, performed a default reset so they could download any new updates, and re-added them to my account.  Still I cannot get the custom commands to work.  However, those same custom commands work perfectly via voice commands.

Hey Koolybop,

Sorry for the delayed response. Please try changing the Assistant language to either English (USA), English (UK) or English (CA) and then rebooting your Google Nest displays. Check if that resolves the issue or not.

Thanks,
Lovely

Good afternoon,

I changed the language from American English to Canadian English and British English, and everything worked well for a little bit.  However, all of the Google devices stopped understanding the custom command (play channel 51 on SiriusXM on bedroom speakers for two hours) and gave me various errors.  The displays informed me that I had to tell it which device to play the music on, and the speakers said they could not find bedroom speaker including the bedroom speakers.

The odd thing is that all of my Google Assistants will play the SiriusXM channel if I use the "Play and control media" action.  However, I can't choose a device to start the routine because it is a voice command routine.  The device that hears the command first will play the music.

I appreciate your help, but I finally gave up using Google Assistant.  I am now using another smart speaker/display combo and have much better success getting it to do what I want even though it always tries to sell me stuff.  It is a trade off I can live with.

Thanks again for your help.

Happy Easter!   I left one display and one speaker running.  I changed the custom command simply to "Play Channel 51 on SiriusXM on Kitchen Speaker."  The response I received from the display was, "Songs aren't available on SiriusXM."  It's not looking good for the home team.

Greetings LovelyM,

I apologize for not responding quicker.  I've been a little busy, and I also wanted to test the fix for a couple of days before I responded to you.

As for the fix, yes, the custom command works great on the speakers and displays.  Thank you so much for chasing this problem down.  However, (there's always an "however."), I now have another problem.  Whenever I give one of my Google Assistant smart devices a command or ask a question, one of them will respond correctly, which is good.  However (there it is again!), one or more of the other speakers/displays will chime in with something like, "there is a problem right now.  Please and try again later." after the command/question has been completed.  I

Another problem I am intermittently having is with paired speakers.  I have two speaker pairs (bedroom and bathroom).  Although I named them "Bedroom Speakers" and "Bathroom Speakers," they sometimes show up on the devices panel with the name of one the speakers before I paired it.  The bedroom pair is labeled "Bedroom Left," and the bathroom pair is labeled "Bathroom Left."  Like I said, those were the names of one of the individual speakers before I paired them.  However, right now the speaker pair names are displayed correctly.

While I am at it, please indulge me a little bit as I make two more suggestions:

1.  Please delete multiple reserve word for the same actions.  For example, the action associated with "Good Night" also has the reserved words "bedtime" and "time to hit the hay."  I would like to use "bedtime" for a different action separate from "good night."

2.  Allow "when I say to my assistant" and "dismiss alarm" actions to select which device will perform the action.  I would love to say, "good night" and have the bedroom speakers play bedtime music regardless of which device responded to my command.

That is all that I have for now.  Because of your assistance, I've set everything up again and even ordered one more Nest Hub Max.  You have given me faith that Google is listening and making improvements with the quickness.  Thank you again for your help.

Hello Koolybop,

Thanks for letting us know about this. We'll take your suggestions as feedback. We'd also appreciate it if you could share this with our product team using the Google Home app. Here's the guide

I also want to check if this is happening to all voice commands or not. Also, please make sure that the Google Home app is up-to-date and observe your stereo pair further.

Keep me in the loop.

Cheers,
Lovely

Happy Friday, LovelyM,

I have confirmed that I have the latest version of Google Home, and today the speaker pairs are  showing Bathroom/Bedroom Left Speaker again.

As for the voice commands, not all of them respond with the error all the time.  Some of them respond some of the time.  I can't figure the rhyme or reason for it, however, all of the speakers and displays have done it before.

Thanks for the suggestion guide.  I will definitely make good use of it.

John

One more thing about the speaker pairs.  If I select them, then the panel does show the correct names for them.

Good morning.    I have an update on which Google device responds with “there is a problem right now…”.  Only the Good Nest Hub Second Gen does it when another Google device responds.   I’ve tried deleting it from my account her perform a hard reset twice, but it still talks crazy to me.  All the others obediently remain quiet.
