Hey Nest Community,
We wanted to provide an update on the animal detection starters for scripted automations. When we first launched support for camera events in the script editor, there were separate animal detection starter types for dog and cat detection. Many of you provided feedback that these did not work as expected. We’ve made some changes to help reduce confusion and provide a more consistent experience.
Here are the changes you’ll notice when creating or editing automations in the script editor:
Moving forward, you can use device.event.AnimalOtherDetection as a starter for automations when your compatible Nest Camera detects a dog OR a cat (other animals are not supported at this time).
We’ve also updated our help documentation to reflect these changes. We apologize for any inconvenience or disruptions with your automations. If you run into any trouble or have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out or create a new topic here in the Home Automation forum.
We’ll keep you posted if we make any more updates.
Cheers,
The Google Home team

Can you expose the device.event.AnimalOtherDetection in the SDM API?
For some reason, it is still not there and greatly missed.
Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏

What was the reason for this change? I want to reported of other animals other than cats and dogs, now I can no longer do that.

Thanks for the update. It’s good to know that animal detection for dogs and cats is now combined into one starter. That should make things easier and less confusing. Appreciate the transparency — I’ll update my automations accordingly.

Thanks for the heads up and the transparency! While it's a bit of a bummer to lose the separate dog and cat triggers, it's great to see improvements toward reliability and consistency. Hopefully, consolidating to device.event.AnimalOtherDetection will reduce false starts and make automations more stable overall. Appreciate the documentation update too—makes transitioning smoother. Looking forward to future enhancements!

Thanks for the clear update! 👍 It’s really helpful to know that cat and dog detections are now combined under device.event.AnimalOtherDetection. While it’s a little disappointing to lose the separate triggers, having one consistent event type should definitely simplify automation setups and reduce confusion. Appreciate the transparency and the documentation updates—looking forward to future improvements and hopefully more granular detection options down the road!

Thanks for the heads-up and the clear breakdown. Consolidating cat and dog detection into a single AnimalOtherDetection starter makes a lot more sense and should reduce confusion for anyone building or maintaining scripts. Appreciate the transparency about existing scripts and the documentation update—looking forward to smoother, more consistent automations going forward. Goojara-to.co.za

Thanks for the clear update and for addressing the confusion around the separate cat and dog detection starters. It’s great to see the team listening to community feedback and simplifying things with device.event.AnimalOtherDetection for a more consistent experience. Wooflix-to.com

More than a year on this is still not exposed in the SDM API.
Please make this available as my cameras are on their way to becoming e-waste at this rate since I was hoping to use them for tracking our dog and supporting automations around that.
At this point they're just going to have to be retired as I don't trust them for security purposes anymore after they failed to trigger recording during a recent incident on our property.

Thanks for the update and the transparency about the change. It’s a bit unfortunate that the separate cat and dog detection starters are being removed, but consolidating them under device.event.AnimalOtherDetection does sound like a cleaner and less confusing approach overall. https://cineby-to.com/

It would be nice on vehicle detection if more variables were available. For example, AI detects my mail truck and trash truck correctly and specifically. But there isn’t a way to build an automation in yaml to create triggers for these events

Thanks for the clear heads‑up on the animal detection starter changes; consolidating the separate dog and cat starters into a single device.event.AnimalOtherDetection should reduce confusion and make scripted automations more predictable going forward, even though it means adjusting existing scripts that used the old types. If anyone’s new to scripted automations or wants more tips on structuring starters and actions in the script editor, the community discussion on creating powerful automations with the new script editor might be useful: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Home-Automation/Let-s-discuss-source-creating-powerful-automations-with-our-new-script-editor/m-p/435126

Appreciate the transparency here—this change definitely clears up a lot of the confusion around inconsistent triggers. While it’s a bit inconvenient to update existing scripts, consolidating cat and dog detection into a single starter feels like a more practical and predictable approach. https://flixer-to.com/

This update feels like a practical step toward simplifying automation scripting, even if it may be frustrating for users who already built workflows around separate cat and dog triggers. Consolidating detection into a single AnimalOtherDetection starter should reduce confusion and likely improve reliability, but it also removes some useful specificity that advanced users may have appreciated. https://gmovies-to.com/
