Nest battery cam won’t connect to starlink

anaaa

We use starlink in a rural area for wifi. We have a google nest wired doorbell and thermos that easily connected. We got 2 nest battery cameras and they cannot be setup. In the beginning they will connect to the wifi but then in the finishing up stage will say there is a network problem. We reset the cameras, my phone, the router, moved closer and further away from the router, and nothing will help. Google sent me 2 replacements after using their help chat. I am having the same issues with the new ones. We split the starlink to 2.4 and that has not helped either. On starlink it says the cameras are connected to the wifi. How can I get these set up?

Hi, anaaa,

Thank you for posting in the community and for providing those details about your setup with Starlink. It's helpful to know your other Nest devices connected without issue. To dig a little deeper into why these battery cameras are having trouble finishing the setup, could you please tell me a bit more?

  • When and from where was the device purchased?

  • How far have you gotten in the pairing process within the Google Home app?

  • What color is the LED status light on the camera when it's attempting to connect and when it fails?

  • Right now, how far is the camera positioned from your Starlink router during the setup attempts?

  • Are your other devices (like your phone or laptop) consistently able to connect to the internet through your Starlink Wi-Fi without any issues?

  • Have you noticed any other smart home devices or even regular devices in your home experiencing any kind of intermittent Wi-Fi connectivity problems with Starlink?

  • Are there any other electronic devices or appliances, such as baby monitors, microwaves, or cordless phones, located in close proximity to where you are trying to pair the Nest Battery Camera?

Your answers to these questions will give us a more detailed picture of the environment and the exact point of failure, which will help us explore the next steps.

Best regards,

Kevin

The issue OP is presenting is similar to many inquiries I have made on these cameras. Just like the OP I have Nest products working fine in the nest app as well as the google home app. I have had nest for years and now the new indoor/outdoor cameras do not finish setup when trying to add the product. My case I have 6 cameras trying to add and not one will connect to Stalink wifi. My Google Nest Hub, Google Nest Floodlight, 2 Nest indoor wired indoor cameras, 2 wired Nest outdoor cameras, Nest door bell, and Nest thermostat all connected and doing fine. The new cameras I just bought, the qty 6, will not complete setup when connecting to the wifi after scanning the QR. So yes other devices connect to the Wifi which includes Google/Nest products. I have removed everything but the current google/nest products from router access and that doesn't work as well. All the answers to your initial boiler plate response to the OP have been answered by both of us. There is no phone n7umber too call you guys which is annoying. Why are these cameras not working with Starlink in the Google Home app setup? What is the solution?

I'm having the issue. I bought the cameras recently from Amazon.

Both came sealed in original packaging.

I'm not sure how far as I'm not sure what steps happen after what I'm getting.  I select my Wi-Fi router, it says it's attempting to connect it spins for a minute or two then comes back and says it failed to communicate.   During this process the camera light flashes slowly blue. After I hear I chime from the camera she the light is still flashing blue.

No other devices have issues connecting to the WiFi, including other cameras, laptops, phones, home hub etc.

I'm 20 feet away from the router.

No other devices are close by and I've tried moving it around.

I tried a factory reset.

You've got a few days before I return these and post negative reviews on Amazon.

Same issue here. Rural location with Starlink. Plenty of bandwidth per speed test. All 5 nest cameras won’t connect.

This issue is the firmware that the camera was shipped with. To solve, you would have to update the camera to the latest firmware before adding it to your home wifi. Add camera using a seperate wifi (phone hotspot), then simply delete and readd the camera to your home wifi without factory resetting the camera. Good luck

This is the answer.

I was able to connect my phone to the neighbors regular fiber DSL WiFi and use that for the doorbell in setup.

Looking for how to trigger a firmware update before I try to update the doorbell to use Starlink WiFi.

This is unfortunate as the doorbell shows it is connected and able to pass traffic on both mixed 2.4/5G, split 2.4 and split 5G, but will not finish setup in the Home app. There should be logic to have the doorbell update firmware once connected to WiFi. I even tried to leave it on overnight and have been working with it for 3 days. There could even be a timeout of no attempted setups for an hour or whatever.

I ordered from directly from the Google Store, didn't ship the same day, maybe they could have made sure the firmware was up to date and able to work with Starlink.

This would be bad for full remote with Starlink as only connection option.  An excellent opportunity for Google to do better.

Hey Matt, I replied below with our final work-around for our nest cameras after a couple days of trial and error. Hopefully may work for your doorbell

Yes, after leaving the doorbell running on the neighbor's wifi for a day, I reset and went back through setup and added doorbell to Starlink Wi-Fi successfully this time.

This could really be a problem for us out in rural areas and nomadic where we may not have access to a neighbor's Wi-fi, any other internet, or even a cell phone signal. And it seems common enough that you would think the Google Home app could at least be updated to provide more direction when another user hits this issue.

Now to figure out how to get it to show up in the Nest app. Even went through setup like new to have it still not listed. ugg...

Glad you got it working! I work for a company that installs google products on a daily basis and just randomly came across this forum. For some reason, T-Mobile and Starlink both share the same issue with the base firmware of the google cameras and doorbells. Anyway, enjoy your new doorbell!

everyone complain to google why not complain to starlink and see maybe it was in their side.

We had issues getting our new Nest Cameras  to connect to Starlink Wi-Fi during setup despite having other nest cams already connected and working. The camera wouldn’t complete setup through the Google Home app and wouldn’t connect to Wi-Fi or would get stuck partway through the process.

Here’s what ended up working for us:

  1. We used an Android device to create a 2.4 GHz hotspot (named NestCamSetup with a simple password like nest12345). I put my SIM card into the Android phone, created the hotspot, then used a second device (my iPhone) to run the Google Home app and set up the camera.
  2. After connecting the camera to the Android hotspot, we left it powered on and online for around 10 minutes to give it time to update its firmware.
  3. Once that was done, we removed the camera from the Google Home app and factory reset the camera (held the reset button for about 20 seconds — the light flashed white, then yellow, then white again).
  4. We then re-set up the camera from scratch in Google Home, this time selecting our Starlink Wi-Fi network. After the firmware update, the camera was finally able to connect properly to Starlink without any issues.

For one of the cameras, I had to repeat the process to get it to eventually work

All of our cameras are now working on Starlink. It was frustrating, but this process got us there in the end.

Once the firmware is updated does factory resetting the camera delete the new firmware update?  It appears that it does not delete the firmware, but I want to double check.

Also, why is it necessary to factory reset the camera at all?

Thank you

You could try without the factory reset, I think the biggest issue is you need to first connect the camera to the internet with a 2.4GHz connection to update the firmware because despite splitting our Starlink into a 2.4GHz and 5GHz band we still couldn’t connect the nest cams to the 2.4GHz Starlink band, but easily connected to the android 2.4GHz hotspot.

The factory reset is just what worked for us with a fair bit of trial and error

I had so many issues trying to connect my battery cams and doorbell until Reddit saved me! I’ve seen a bunch of people post the same issue but in regards to connecting with T-Mobile home internet. I used my husbands hotspot instead and fully set up the camera. It updated and was working perfectly through hotspot. Then I factory reset the thing, removed it from my app and connected it to my internet just fine when setting it up again. Seems like the issue is it needs to update. A little time consuming but worked for both cams and the doorbell. Hope this helps!
