Nest x Yale lock adding temporary guests

We have a rental property and want to add renters in Google Home but with limited access.   Or allow contractors temporary access.   However, it only looks like members added have full access and can even remove me if they choose.   When will Nest add this feature?   I think you used to have this functionality in the Nest app.  Seems crazy that we cannot have members with different levels of access.

Hey Volunteer-2027,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I’d be happy to help you with the Nest x Yale Lock. Let’s check it out.

You can give someone limited access with Home Entry Only using the Nest app. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. If you have more than one home in the Nest app, make sure that the one you want to grant access to is active on the app's home screen. If it’s not, tap Menu on the app home screen, then select the home you want.
  3. Tap Settings on the home screen.
  4. Tap Family & Guests.
  5. Tap Add a person.
  6. Enter the person’s name as you’d like it to appear in the Nest app and tap Continue.
  7. Tap Home entry only.
  8. An entry passcode will be generated automatically for the person. If you want to create your own passcode for them,
    1. Tap Show Passcode to view the passcode.
    2. Tap Change Passcode.
    3. Enter a new passcode and tap Save.
  9. You can also set a schedule to choose when the person can enter your home.
    1. Tap Schedule.
    2. Tap Starts to set a start date for entry, and tap Expires if you want to set an end date for entry to your home.
    3. Set the daily schedule to allow them to enter your home all day, or at certain times of the day and on specific days of the week.
    4. Tap Back to save your changes and return to the person’s profile.
  10. To email the passcode to the person, tap Send Info. If you make any changes to their schedule or passcode later, you can always select Send Update.
  11. Enter the email address and add a short note about what the person might need to know about your home.
  12. Tap Send.

They should receive an email invitation from account@nest.com within a couple of minutes. The email will include a passcode that they can use to arm or disarm Nest Secure and lock or unlock the Nest × Yale Lock when they enter and leave.

You can check out this guide to learn about Family Accounts and how to share access to your Nest home.

Let me know if you have any questions.

All the best,

Lance

Lance, thank you so much.   The Nest app is going away in April and we have to go to Google Home app.  This functionality is not currently available in the Google Home app.  Do you know when it will be available?  I am assuming they are working on it and we will have that funcationality in the Google Home app.  I just as soon migrate over to the Google Home app but the Nest app has the features we need for this Yale lock.

Hello Volunteer-2027,

The Nest app isn’t going away in April. What’s ending on April 8, 2024, is the support for Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works with Nest. You can check out this blog for an update for our Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works with Nest Users and Developers.

As this is a community forum supported by other users and community specialists, the best way to get your thoughts, feedback, or feature requests to the people who can make changes is by submitting feedback.

Regards,

Lance

I have the exact same problem now that I am forces to use Google Home instead of the Nest app - makes me invite a new family member who would then have full privileges on my google home vs being able to add a new guest  to  the Neat app and give a new code and specify when they have access to enter with the lock.  It is not even April 8th yet but the directions you gave for using the Nest app to add a guest no longer work and it just directs me to the Google Home app.  My lock no longer has the functionality I paid for!

I'm consistently receiving the "something went wrong,  try again later” when trying to add a new code for airbnb guests. How can I trouble shoot this?

Was anybody able to fix the problem?
Thank you!

Hi RossanaB,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I'm sorry to hear the passcodes in your Nest x Yale Lock are not working as expected. I'm here to help! Let's take a look and see what's going on.

Basic checks:

Network Connectivity:

  • A stable internet connection is essential for the Nest app to communicate with the lock. Verify your Wi-Fi connection.

Passcode Format:

  • Double-check the passcode format. It should typically be a numerical code within a specific length range (e.g., 4-8 digits).

App Update:

  • Ensure you're running the latest version of the Nest app. Updates often contain bug fixes and performance improvements related to login functionality.

Lock Firmware:

  • Ensure your Nest Yale Lock has the latest firmware. Check the Nest app for updates.

Temporary Server Issues:

  • Nest servers might experience temporary issues. Try creating the passcode later.

Please make sure you check How to set or change passcodes for Nest × Yale Lock before proceeding.

Important considerations:

To keep your Nest x Yale Lock connected after support ends for Nest Secure you already have the Nest Connect, however it is important to remove the Nest Secure in case it is still added in the account as it may interfere with the Passcodes update and set up.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Regards,

Mario
