New Matter Update - where do Matter devices show up?

With the new Matter update rolling out, I'm hoping to start using my Nanoleaf Essentials A19 bulbs using Matter (instead of the terrible Bluetooth I've been getting by on).

Has anyone enabled any Matter devices yet, and if so where are they viewed, connected and controlled in the Home app?

Nanoleaf A19 aren't getting Matter, but they do have thread.

Yes, I've since realized this and am still stuck waiting on the Thread update for my Nest Wifi Pro coming next year.

In the meantime though, I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has successfully gotten a Matter device working with their Google border routers.

I've also got a Nest Thermostat that supports Matter, but this also is not yet showing up. I still can't find any area anywhere in Home or in the Nest Wifi Pro settings to actually interact with Matter devices at all.

Matter is a new smart home industry standard to make setup and use of smart home devices easier and more compatible. Select Google devices support Matter, with more to be added in the future. Here's some info about devices that can connect with Matter:

To control a Matter-enabled device with the Google Home app or Google Assistant, you need a hub. Select Google devices have received software updates so they can work as a hub for Matter:

• Wi-Fi routers: Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E)
• Speakers: Google Home, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio
• Displays: Nest Hub (1st gen), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max

To check if a Google Nest or other device is Matter-compatible, look for the Matter logo on the package.

Benefits of Matter-enabled devices

• Quick and consistent setup process for all your Matter-enabled smart home devices
• Can be used in multiple smart home ecosystems (Google Home, Apple HomeKit and more) at the same time
• Connect locally over Thread or Wi-Fi for better reliability and faster response

How Matter-enabled devices work

Matter is designed to work locally over your Wi-Fi and Thread networks. When you add a Matter-enabled device to your Google Home, it joins the same network as your Google device that works as a hub for Matter. This lets you control it whether you’re home or away. For instance, when you ask your Nest Mini to turn on a light or other smart home device, the Nest Mini will send that request over the internet to Nest cloud services. It'll typically be relayed to your light manufacturer’s partner cloud, which then tells your light to turn on.

With Matter-enabled devices, there are fewer steps, so control is simpler and quicker even when you’re away from home. When you make the same request, Google Home will simply tell the light to turn on over your Wi-Fi or Thread network without having to relay your command to the cloud and back to your light.

Thanks! I still can't see Matter devices as such. I've got for example the Nest thermostat and Nest Wi-Fi Pro, so they should be communicating over Matter, but how can I see that and identify it?

None of these replies tell me how to view and manage devices communicating over the Matter protocol.  My question is simple: how do I determine which devices are using Matter, and how do I tell compatible devices to use Matter if they aren't?

I'm still not able to view any information on Matter-connected devices through Google Home or from my Nest Pro routers. 

How can you view your Matter-connected devices? How can you manage Matter devices?

Hello DrewLazz,

You can view and manage your Matter-enabled devices in the Google Home app like you would with the previously linked third-party devices. There's also not much difference in the way you can add them to the app.

If your smart devices are Matter-enabled, their packaging should bear the Matter logo. You can also contact their manufacturer directly to confirm this.

Thanks, but how do I know which devices are communicating over Matter? For example, I've got a Nest Thermostat and Nest Pro Wifi. How do I see if the Nest Thermostat us using Matter protocol? Where is that information displayed?

I'm sorry for the delayed response. Your smart devices will appear in the Google Home app as they did previously. There's no option to see how they communicate through Matter since this only incorporates easier setup and management using different ecosystems.
