Play / Pause triggers don’t work any more

Oberoi

I recently upgraded from a Google Chromecast device to the newer Google TV Streamer and noticed a key feature that my previous Chromecast device supported is no longer available.

With my Chromecast, I could use automations in Google Home that triggered based on the playback state—specifically when content played, paused, or stopped. This allowed me to integrate smart home actions, like adjusting lights, with playback. Unfortunately, on my new Google TV Streamer, the automation triggers seem limited to device power states (only turning on and off).

Could you clarify if there’s a way to enable playback-based triggers on the Google TV Streamer similar to the old Chromecast? If this feature is currently unavailable, are there any plans to add this back in a future update?

Hi @Oberoi,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing detailed information. I understand that you want to know about various features and triggers that your Google TV Streamer (4K) and your old Chromecast don't have. I'm here to help you.

To assist you further, please attempt the following questions:

  • How do you have your Google Home app home automation system set up?
  • Is your Google TV Streamer (4K) located in the same home structure?
  • Are all of your devices up to date, including your smartphone?

Please keep me posted.

Warm regards,

Jeremy.

Hey! I am on the latest iOS with the iPhone 16 Pro. My Google Home setup is entirely on that system, on the same WiFi.

to be clear, the feature that I want works on the old Google chrome cast, but do not work on the new Google streamer.

Thank you for your prompt response and the detailed information you've provided. Please help me with these two further questions:

  • Are you opted into Public Preview in the Google Home app?
  • Which Chromecast model was their previous device?

Please keep me posted.

Warm regards,

Jeremy.

To answer your questions:

  • I am not opted into the Public Preview
  • The previous model was Chromecast with Google TV
