I am trying to install a nest battery to existing chime. The existing transformer is 15v 10va 60hz but when I connect the wiring to the existing wires I seem to have no power to the doorbell. I did test the connection of the wire terminal to the lead wires with the old pushbutton and that worked. Question is does the nest have to be attached to the backplate for some reason to be active? As there are no apparent contacts on the case I would think the chime would work with the unit hanging by the wires (supported for safety) but it doesn't. Also, the existing chime requires a diode across the terminals to activate the full length of the chime tone - is this diode required with the nest, adding it or subtracting it makes no difference to my situation

Your 15V 10VA transformer is the minimum; we have a 16V 30VA transformer for our Nest Hello Doorbells. Other customers have reported problems with 16V 10VA transformers.
The newer Google Nest doorbells need to be "mounted" to work; judging from other posts I think there may be a small magnet in the mounting bracket that the doorbell senses.
The purpose of the "chime puck" is to provide continuous power to the doorbell's camera without tripping the chime.
