4th Gen will not detect motion to trigger Home Routine

Blaythe
Community Member

I just purchased a 4th Generation Thermostat.  I have the thermostat enabled for presence sensing in Google Home App.  This thermostat will not detect motion to trigger Home routines.  Touch control works just fine to trigger Home Routine for presence sensing.

Is this thermostat faulty?

Updated to most current version of Android Software in addition to most current version of Google Home

Hi @Blaythe,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand that you're using the presence sensing on your Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) to activate your home routines, but it hasn't been working as expected, failing to activate each routine. Don't worry, I'm here to help!

From what you've been experiencing, it's great to know that you have the latest Android software update and the most recent version of the Google Home app. In this case, you've already verified that the touch controls are working correctly. To get to a solution for what might be affecting it, I'd like to ask you a few questions:

  • Does your home network support WPA2 or WPA3 security?
  • Are you able to connect to your home Wi-Fi network on your phone?
  • Are you the only person with this feature, or are there more people in your home with this access?

In the meantime, I'd like to share some troubleshooting steps that might help you:

  • You can start a Home & Away Routine with a voice command to Google Assistant, let's use voice commands:
    • To start the Home Routine, say "Hey Google, someone's home."
    • To start the Away Routine, say "Hey Google, everyone's away" or "Hey Google, everyone's leaving."
  • Turn presence sensing off then on.
    • Open the Google Home app.
    • Tap Settings.
    • In the "Home features" section, tap Presence sensing.
    • Turn Allow this home to use phone locations on or off.
  • Check if you've set location permissions for the Home App on your phone to Always on.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,
