Dual fuel heat pump clicking noise

  • Just had a new Fujitsu dual fuel heat pump installed about 6 months ago. Also had a new Nest Learning thermostat installed with it. Old 1st Gen I had for years wasn't compatible. System seemed to run great during cooling season. When we switched to heating it seemed fine and then randomly stopped working. Thermostat showed orange but the outside heat pump was not running. It would make a clicking noise for about 3 minutes and stop. The thermostat still showed it was trying to heat. A reboot of the thermostat or turning off the temp cut off seemed to kick in the heater. Google sent me a new thermostat and back plate which I swapped. Seemed to run for a week okay and then all of a sudden the outside unit started clicking again for about 3 minutes and then stop. Inside thermostat showed it trying to heat. Reboot kicked it on but it did it again after an hour. I now have the heat pump off by setting the cut off to never use the heat pump and seems to be working that way.

Hello BMill,

It appears you've been dealing with some issues with your new Fujitsu dual-fuel heat pump and Nest Learning thermostat. But I appreciate that you've been troubleshooting and finding temporary solutions like rebooting the thermostat and adjusting the temperature cutoff.

Since you've already received a replacement thermostat from us and the problem persists, it might be worth checking the compatibility and settings of your heat pump system. Sometimes, certain systems may require specific configurations or adjustments to work seamlessly with smart thermostats. I'd love to know more about this.

Could you share with us your previous support ID number? Also, gather the power readouts on your thermostat in the Technical Info settings.

I'll look forward to your response.

Best regards,
Mark

Mark,

Thanks for offering to help. I have replaced the Nest thermostat with a different brand smart thermostat and the new one has been working for 2 weeks without issues. HVAC technician and Fujitsu tech support both said the problem was probably the Nest and that I could be damaging the heat pump running it with the Nest. So I had to swap it out.
