Intermittent issue: furnace won't stop heating

Yesterday I learned my heater stayed on all day while I was traveling...how was 79. I turned off the thermostat from the app but kept running. It's a 3rd Gen Nest. I read post between Michaelo and Zoe and tried what Michael did...turned the dial past the 79, let it set for a but then turned it back down. That worked, thankfully, and the furnace stopped running. But in reading Michaelo's post sounded like this was happening more than once...but he never got a response on permanent fix or whether it needs to be replaced. My thermostat is less than a year old. Any suggestions?

Hi StephHudd333,

I'm sorry to hear that your furnace keeps on running though you've tried to turn the thermostat passed 79 degrees. Let's sort this out.

Remove the thermostat display from the base and wait about five minutes then observe if thesystem turns off or stays on.

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Zoe

Hello Zoe. Actually I did what was suggested before...I turned the dial past the 79, let it set for a bit then turned it back down. That worked and the furnace stopped running and is fine now. But in reading Michaelo's post sounded like this was happening more than once and Im concerned this is going to happen again when I'm away. It appears Michaelo asked if there's a permanent fix or if it needs to be replaced and he never got a response.  My thermostat is less than a year old. Any suggestions on a permanent fix?

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to us. The furnace activating unexpectedly could possibly be a furnace or thermostat issue. I appreciate you following some other troubleshooting steps; however, as a part of the diagnosis, the removal of the thermostat display from the base and waiting about five minutes, then observing if the system turns off or stays on, will help us identify more about what's causing this problem. Therefore, I encourage you to follow it so we can take a closer look at this issue.

Regards,

Zoe
