My energy bill went up due to Nest Thermostat. Can I claim any compensation

My gas bill is typically in the range of $80 to $120 during the fall/winter season as my heating system is based on gas. I installed Nest smart thermostat in Aug 2022. My Jan 2023 $803 nearly 10x

On 3rd of Jan I noticed that the house was feeling warmer than it should be. I had set my thermostat in heat/cool mode with 74/78 settings. When the house was warm I was getting hot air from the vents even though thermostat indicated that it was in cooling mode. I called an HVAC expert to take a look and he noticed that my air conditioning unit was active and could hear the gas furnace in the heating system to be on as well. When we opened the HVAC control unit the furnace switched off. We did some random tests by changing temperatures and it all worked fine. This repeated a few times in the following couple of weeks and each time when the thermostat indicated it has stopped heating, it was actually not switching off.

Looks like this has caused such high usage. This is no mistake of mine. A faulty product has created such a huge expense for me. I feel cheated at the end of the day for paying such a high price for the product and now the high electricity bill. I would like to know if I can raise my case with google ask for a compensation. What documents will be needed to support my claim?

Heating a location to 74/78 F will cost a small fortune. Gas prices are through the roof this year.

Please note that until early Jan my bill was just $80  - $120. $800 is 7 to 10x more. I have been in this home for 3 years now and this has never costed me more than the above range. Can someone tell if its possible to claim compensation for a faulty product. With the fault that we observed I don't think it would have mattered if the temp was set at 70 or 74, trust me.

You were likely running auxiliary heat from your hvac unit constantly. That's why your heating bill was through the roof. You should always monitor your settings and electrical usage via your local electric company. If your usage is high one day try and pinpoint the cause. It's not the nests fault but rather a user error. Do you have heat pump balance on or off. If on is it set to max saving or comfort. Max savings is what you want.
