Nest 4th gen does not show indoor temperature or humidity

ARTIDono1

Hello,

Just installed and connected a Nest 4th generation thermostat. However, the internal temperature sensor (and humidity sensor) do not appear to be working. I can turn the set temperature down to 65 and the AC will not kick in. On the display, there is no indoor temperature, just 2 lines. I wasn't planning on using the external sensor, but I went ahead and set it up and connected it. I selected it as the only sensor associated with the nest and with that, the AC will turn on. The display will show the indoor temperature the same as the external sensor (but the humidity reading still only shows two lines.)

I reset the nest and tried it again with the same results. If I disassociate the external sensor,  after a period of time, the display will again just show two lines for indoor temperature as the nest itself does not seem able to sense the room temperature. Am I missing something or is my nest defective? Thanks for any assistance.

Hi @ARTIDono1,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I'm sorry to hear your Nest thermostat isn't working as expected with the internal temperature and humidity sensors. I appreciate your effort in already doing some troubleshooting steps. I'm glad to help.

To help me troubleshoot this issue more effectively, could you please answer the following questions?

  • What type of HVAC system do you have?
  • Do you see any error codes on the Nest thermostat's screen?
  • Where did you install the Nest thermostat (e.g., hallway, living room)?
  • Have you set up a temperature schedule for your thermostat?
  • Could you please send a photo of the wiring on your thermostat's backplate?

I look forward to your response so we can find a solution for you soon.

Regards,

Gabriela

Gabriela,

Thanks for your response.

  • What type of HVAC system do you have? Lenox (not a heat pump)
  • Do you see any error codes on the Nest thermostat's screen? no error codes
  • Where did you install the Nest thermostat (e.g., hallway, living room)? Primary bedroom
  • Have you set up a temperature schedule for your thermostat? no
  • Could you please send a photo of the wiring on your thermostat's backplate? see attached

I have done a factory reset without resolution. I have also tried it with the red wire to Rc.

Appreciate any help you can give me.

Hi @ARTIDono1,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the time you took to respond to my questions and the pictures you provided me. I'm glad to continue assisting you.

Please try the following steps:

  • Restart the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)
    • Settings > Restart > Restart. The thermostat takes a few moments to restart and boot back up.
  • Turn on Sunblock
    • Open the Home app and select the thermostat.
    • Tap Settings > Temperature preferences > Sunblock.
    • Turn the Sunblock On.

Please keep me posted if you have any questions or if these steps resolve the issue.

Regards,

Gabriela

Gabriela,

Thanks for your reply. Reset the thermostat twice. Still no indoor temperature reading without using the external sensor. Sunblock was already on, but tried turning off, then on without any success.
