Nest Thermostat turns on heat randomly even when inside temp is > the set temp

My Nest thermostat model 1.4 s/w ver 1.1-11 turns on randomly even when inside temperature is higher than the set temperature (Inside 69, set 64, outside weather 57F). It runs for couple of minutes and then shuts off. This happens more frequently in night.

How is it wired?

Does it have a C wire?

Hello there,

Thanks for helping here. @Patrick_Caezza.

@ParamusNJ, thanks for the details. I'd love to know more about this.

Could you please check your thermostat's power readouts? On your actual thermostat, go to Equipment Settings and select Power Info. Also, does this always happen when it reaches the set temperature?

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

I have to reply this tomorrow as you have requested to go the actual thermostat

Do you happen to have a picture of the original thermostat's wiring that you can post?

Hi Patrick- do you have any suggestion? It is very annoying when heat is turning on every 30 minutes for 1-2 minutes when the inside temperature is well above the set temp. How do i totally shut of the heating? I tried selecting Off, but it still turn on? Is there any relation to outside home temp which is below the set temp

Thank you @Jake . I have gone through possiblly all articles on the Net! There is no problem in the wiring. C wire is there. I have now put a new Nest Thermostat this morning. So far, the fan is not kicking in randomly. I have made the safety temp = Off, Fan = Auto, Wire Y-C-W-G-R in good connected conditions. Gas > Forced Air, Early-on=Zero, Airwave=Yes, time-totemp=ready, Leag=ready. Comfort=67 heat, 75 Cool, Eco=56, 82, Sleep=62, 75.  Inside is 70, outside home is 56, set temp=67 . The fan did not run randomly during the day. I have to see it in the night. If this does not work, unfortunately, I will have to switch back to Honeywell!

Is there a way to control the cycle of heat / fan how fast it comes on. Sometime, it seems to be doing too rapidly. Can we control to let the thermostat sense the temp compared with the set temp and then kick in the heat cycle, say every 30 minute only when needed otherwise it should not start the cycle of heat/fan. Frequent on/off is the one causing disturbance in going to sound sleep!!

@Patrick_Caezza  did you get a chance to review the remaining thread with details?

You have a 3-zone system with zones 1 & 2 having a C wire, but zone 3 doesn't have a C wire.

Without a C wire on zone three, it will cause that thermostat to show the symptoms that you are talking about, but only on the zone 3 thermostat.

Go to SETTINGS, then ECO to see the heating and cooling temperature settings.  These settings override your manual settings.  Change these settings so that they are beyond the settings of your manual settings if you want the manual settings to have priority.   Likewise, go to SCHEDULE, then look at each day to see if there are temperature settings at specific times of each day which will also override your manual settings if not beyond your manual settings.  Delete them if you do not use them.

I replaced the Nest with Honeywell and it is working well. Unfortunate that Nest does not provide any tested help, but provides very generic help.

Did you check SETTINGS, then select ECO heating and cooling temperature settings?  Since you said it happens frequently at night, maybe the ECO heat temperature setting is 70 and it is overriding your manual setting of 64.  Also check the SCHEDULE feature to make sure you do not have similar temperature settings for specific times and specific days which will also override your manual setting.
