Nest Thermostat went out of calibration by 4 degrees- overnight

As SO many others have asked, without solutions, I thought I would ask AGAIN to see if I can get a solution that actually works.

Yesterday my thermostat suddenly began regulating the room temperature 4 degrees below where its been since the installation 6mo. ago.

I restarted the thermostat and when that didn't work, I reset it from scratch.  No luck.  The thermostat now has to be set at 77 degrees to maintain a 73 degree temp.  The NEST actually reports that it's 4 degrees warmer than it really is.

I have Ambient temperature sensors to validate that the temperature in the room is actually 4 degrees below where NEST thinks it is.

I really hate to waste my time asking this question because looking back a few years, the problem hasn't been solved and many customers have just given up.   Apparently NEST had a calibration feature where you could adjust variants with the sensor, but that's been removed.

Nothing has changed with the location of the thermostat. It sits on an internal wall with nothing near or behind it.

For the past 6mo. it's been regulating the temperature perfectly according to my Ambient weather sensors, which I have set up for alerts.  The room is REALLY only 69 and uncomfortable when it's set to 73.  If it sounds like I'm a bit frustrated, I opened my Google TV app this morning and found all my apps all rearranged again, another problem that can't seem to be fixed. I have a long history in IT and frankly I see this lack of attention to detail a huge negative in this field.

Hi Rickp,

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear that your thermostat is reading incorrect ambient temperature. Let me take a look at this for you. A few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • When was the thermostat installed?
  • Where did you install your thermostat? In a room and on a wall or stand?
  • Do you have other active Nest Thermostats? If yes, do they show the same issue?

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Zoe

He replied, where is your response?

I have the same problem.

Learning Nest, installed over a year.

Now showing temp 4 degrees higher than room ambient (even wall ambient). This is verified with multiple other sources.

Worked fine,  now doesn't

No way to calibrate temp???

It's your premium learning Thermostat purchased about 3 months ago.   It's installed on a wood panel in a room at the lower level of my home.  It's part of a 2 zone heating system.   The other NEST is on the 2nd floor and I've had that for several years.  I also have a 3rd Nest for the A/C system that's about 6 years old.

I've never had this issue with any other NEST product and I also use them in another home as well.

I did a factory reset on this Nest and started over.   It was still reading higher than the actual temperature for several hours but after 24hrs began to regulate closer.  It's now only off by one degree, which is acceptable.

My concern is it's reliability.  I can't afford to have it suddenly decide to regulate at a lower temperature.  Why did this happen?  Why did resetting it and starting over from scratch fix it when I've NEVER had to do this with any of my previous NEST's??  Does it indicate that this recently purchased NEST has a defect?

Hi everyone,

I understand a slight temperature variation on your thermostat is not ideal. Let's work on it together to see how we can fix it.

If your thermostat is not showing the correct temperature, there are some simple troubleshooting steps that you can try:

  • Calibrate the sensors on the thermostat by restarting it
  • Check if the Sunblock setting is on to avoid external heat sources affecting the readout.

In some rare cases, if the temperature is off, it could be caused by an incompatibility with a Wifi access point. You can check this article regarding the Recommended Wi-Fi router settings for Nest thermostats to ensure your Wifi settings are compatible.

You can also disconnect the Wifi network for 24 hours to rule out any incompatibility issues by:

  1. Going into the settings
  2. Tapping on network
  3. Selecting disconnect

Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Angel

My 2nd gen has been fine, until I reset just now (because I got a new phone and was connecting the new appl).  I updated the appl on the phone, and checked update software on the thermostat but it said none was needed.  I had to reset the appl connection because it said it was already connected to an account.  I never changed accounts or user/pswd etc.  Anyway, after resetting the thermostat it read 4 or 5 degrees higher than another thermostat next to it, and higher than it was just displaying before the reset.  They have a software bug.
