Instead of shuttering these devices completely which is honestly a disgrace considering they still work completely well, will you consider:
A) similar to the approach taken by Sonos, offer a legacy app that can still control these devices remotely.
B) allow existing API integration to continue to be available so somebody clever can build their own little app to chat control the simpler aspects such as monitoring temperature, setting temperature, seeing home / Away.
I also have 10 nest protects expiring this year, which had a bit more argument to be excited sure to the sensors starting to decay. But honestly the environmental impact of replacing all these perfectly working devices makes me sick.
Sensors should be hot swappable if that's an issue. There's nothing wrong with the test of the device.

It's because they hate you and need to increase their bottom line. They'll save a few bucks by not having to support Gen 1 and Gen 2 models, and it costs them nothing. In fact, they'll probably increase revenues by getting fools who don't know any better to upgrade to the newer model.
They are willing to make your life difficult so they can have more money. Simple as. . .

I agree. It is ridiculous to disable perfectly good devices in order to upsell to newer devices. I have 2 homes, each with a gen 2 thermostat that both work fine. I DO NOT want to integrate with other google home crap; I just want to be able to monitor my 2 homes for temperature. Sonos tried this same program in 2020 and due to overwhelming negative feedback managed to quickly create a simple S1 controller for the older devices I spent thousands on. (Which all still work wonderfully, by the way!)
Google: Create a standalone Nest Thermostat app for the gen 1 & gen 2. I will buy new thermostats when my current ones die.

100% this. Give us a simple remote temperature set app FFS.

Well said. Google have really snot themselves in the foot here. Outrageous way to treat loyal early adopters.
