Nest thermostat not turning on furnace after working fine for a year

I have had my nest thermostat for a year with no issues. In the last two weeks I've had two times where overnight the heat does not kick on. If I go into the thermostats history it shows the heat is running for x amount of hours straight, but the heat is actually not on. If I go over to the vents it's blowing cold/room temp air.  To fix this both times I popped off the thermostat off the wall pulled a battery put the battery back in put the thermostat back on the wall and then within seconds, the heat kicks on and within 30 to 40 minutes I'm back up to 71 from 65 or whatever it fell to.

Now, if I'm not mistaken since all I'm doing is resetting the thermostat and it's turning on it's got to be an issue with the thermostat? When I go down to my furnace it's just blinking the red light every other second and my HVAC guy said that's normal it's not throwing any codes.

So essentially this thermostat went bad after 1 year.. which is ridiculous... I'm going to try a master reset on it but I don't think I should have to do that after 1 year..

If I'm missing anything somebody let me know.

Thanks!

Hi @Johnsonroda27,

Thank you very much for reaching out to this community! I understand the situation with your Nest Thermostat. It has worked well for a year now, but in the last two weeks, the heating failed to turn on twice during the night. Although it appears to be running, it is not actually heating. I appreciate the time you took to perform various troubleshooting steps, such as confirming with an HVAC technician that your unit is functioning, checking the airflow from the vents, and removing the battery. Don't worry, I am here to help you!

I would like to ask you a few questions so I can provide you with some troubleshooting steps:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • What other strange symptoms have you experienced since the problem started?
  • Are there any error messages? If so, what are they exactly?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?
  • Have you experienced any power outages within the last few days or weeks?

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,
Eduardo

Hi @Johnsonroda27,

I apologize for the accidental tag; that was my mistake. While your information is valuable, I would like to add a few questions:

Which wires are connected to your Nest Thermostat?

  • Do you have any schedules set on your thermostat?

  • Does the thermostat screen indicate that it is calling for heat?

  • When did the heating last work?

To help identify the cause of this issue, please perform the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Make sure the thermostat wires are completely inserted to the terminals.
  • Run a diagnostic test on your thermostat:
    • Test both your heating and cooling mode:
      • Set your thermostat’s mode to Heat.
      • Raise the target temperature until the thermostat display turns orange.
      • Wait a few minutes and check the air from your vents.
      • Repeat steps 1 to 3 for Cool mode.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,
Eduardo
