I just moved into a new home with a Nest Thermostat already installed. I'm not certain of the generation, the device info says hardware version 1.4, software version 1.3-10.
When I moved in, it functioned like a standard thermostat. It properly functioned to control my furnace as a heater. It wasn't connected to any device or my wi-fi.
In order to add the device to Google Home and my wi-fi, I did a factory reset and set it up with my phone. Now it believes that my furnace is an air conditioner and blasts heat when the set temperature is below the ambient temperature. The only settings available are "cool" and "off," both on the Nest and in the Home app.
No wires were changed and all wire connections that were there when it worked (Y-C-R) are still connected in the exact same way. The Nest recognizes the wires as connected.
Is this a fixable issue? I know the little guy is capable of it - he did it before and I'd hate to trash it for a normal thermostat if this is a me problem.

It sounds like your Nest Thermostat is misidentifying your HVAC system after the reset. Check the wiring to ensure everything’s correct, then reconfigure it in the app to confirm it’s set as a furnace, not an AC. If the issue continues, contact Nest support for help. It’s fixable, so don’t give up yet!
