New 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat warm to touch and reporting high ambient temp

Anadel

I received a 3rd gen Nest thermostat for Christmas. I installed it soon after. It was working fine until about 6 weeks later (yesterday) it was reporting a high ambient temperature (28 C) while the actual temperature was 18C. I took the faceplate off and the base plate was warm to the touch. I have turned off the WiFi to the Nest but the issue is still not resolved.

This is a big problem as it’s winter in Canada. My house temp went down to 14C last night as the Nest didn’t recognize the correct temperature and the furnace did not kick in.

Mine did the same thing. Changed batteries, let it cool down. Reinstalled. Within minutes it was reading a high ambient temp, at least 30 degrees warmer than room temp. Just started last night…

Hi there,

@Anadel, thanks for reaching out — I'd love to know more about it:

  • Check the Signal strength by going to Settings > Technical Info > Network.
  • Take a photo of your room thermometer next to your Nest Thermostat showing the actual temperature.
  • Check if your thermostat is near any possible heat source like:
    • Air vents that direct warm air
    • Appliances (that includes large televisions)
    • Electrical outlets
    • Plumbing (hot water pipes in old buildings are frequently not insulated)
    • Warm air in the wall

@JTD, you can also try the steps above.

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Jenelyn

No unknown heat sources near the thermostat. Called HVAC technician, after complete system check, determined it was faulty Nest. Replaced with Honeywell unit. All working now. Nest was 9 months old…
