Thermostat lock function not working to specification

PapaGolf

I have a Nest Learning thermostat.  I want to allow users to change the temperature but not fiddle around with the settings.  The lock facility appears to provide this functionality.  The manual says: 'When you lock your Nest thermostat in heat mode or cool mode, you'll set a temperature range after you create a four-digit PIN. Anyone can turn the thermostat's ring to change the temperature within the range that you've set, but they won't be able to set the temperature outside of your range or change any of your settings.'

However it doesn't work correctly.  When locked, attempts to change the temperature fail and are met with a request to unlock.  That is, instead of allowing temperature changes within the set range, all user interaction is blocked.  This is contrary to the specification.

I have posted about this before but the workaround* suggested didn't work, and the original thread has been locked.

Can this be fixed?

* The workaround suggested was ' try restarting your thermostat to refresh it and ensure it is on software version 3.0 or late.' I restarted the thermostat, but this did not solve the problem. The software version was shown as 5.9.5-2. There were two options, Full Reset and Restart. I did not know which was required and initially chose 'Restart' as this corresponded most closely to the words in quotes above. I did not have time to try a full Reset and in any case was loath to do this without advice in case it caused other problems. I shall be at the property at the end of this week. Should I choose a Full Reset? Or is there another solution?

Hello there! Thanks for posting and sorry for the late reply. Can you please let me know where you are based and what type of Nest Learning thermostat you are using?

Hello.  Thanks for this.  In the UK, and it's a Google Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation.

Thanks for confirming. Can you please send me a picture in which the range is seen clearly?

You should have the option to attach it to a thread response. Please check and let me know if it's not possible and I'll find another way.

I can't see an option on this screen to upload.

It is the camera icon that you can see between the smiley face and the three points.

OK.   How's this?

Thanks for the photo. That looks good, so we can only recommend proceeding with a factory reset on the thermostat since the restarts didn't help. For that go to Settings > Reset > All Settings . You could also try removing the thermostat from the app and adding it again.

OK.   I'll try that over the weekend.

Hi, I wanted to check in. Did you have the chance to try my colleagues suggestion? Make sure to let us know how it went.

Hello Alex,

Yes, the factory reset seemed to do the trick.  The lock function now seems to work OK.

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards, PapaGolf
