Understanding eco mode in nest thermostats

Gizbug

I left town on vacation Saturday March 22. I have 2 Nest (newest models) at home. When I initially left the house, both thermostats went to eco mode as they should…. No one was home. Upon arriving home today, I noticed the thermostats have been running a few hours during the day. Why is this? The eco temp is set to 58F and the house never got colder than that to run the heat.  It seems the nest ran my normal schedules that I have programmed even when no one was home.

Is this how the eco logic is suppose to work? Switch to eco when I leave but if later in the day I have a schedule temp setting, it no longer follows the eco logic and the scheduled temp takes priority??

So basically I am wasting money and raising my gas bill by having the nest run when I’m not home.

UPDATE

Support told me “Regarding Home/Away Assist, it can be interrupted if you have any active schedules in the app, even if there's no one at home. This is because your Google Nest Thermostat prioritizes the schedules. Therefore, we'd like to try deleting all your schedules in the app and monitoring your Google Nest Thermostat with Home/Away Assist to verify if this process helps maintain your Eco Mode when no one is home.”

defeats the purpose. Either do t have schedules and have eco work as advertised or keep schedules and not have eco work correctly

Hi Gizbug,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that your Nest thermostat runs when you're not at home. I appreciate the information you shared, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Help's here!

Before I begin, I need to ask you a few questions for further assistance:

  • What kind of Nest thermostat do you have?
  • What type of HVAC system do you have? (heating and cooling, heating only, cooling only).
  • When was the Nest Thermostat installed?
  • What troubleshooting have you done so far?
