2 Home Nest routers - Switch & Points

BigBadger
Community Member

Would like to know the correct config for my Home Network.  I have ISP Modem Router with a 1GB Internet Connection.  I have a 5 port switch connected  directly to the ISP Modem Router. I also have 2 x Nest Routers and 3x Wifi points.  The ISP Modem Router , switch and 1 Nest router are very close together but not central in my house.  I want to install the second Nest Router more central in the house to provide better access to the 3 x WiFi points.  The three WiFi points can then be used as speakers to play music etc.  What would be the best config including hard wiring if needed.  The points would also be used for streaming.  My house is not very big but is all on one level, solid walls and covers about 3000sq ft.  I realise I would have to experiment with position/ coverage but I need the optimum config correct before I start.

Enable first bridge mode on your ISP modem router combo this is to avoid double NAT config then hard wire your ISP modem router to your Google Wifi router then set up in your Google Home App then you can hard wire your Google router to your switch for other devices then set up your mesh points.

Thanks.  Taken a look at the ISP Router and there does not seem to be a Bridge Mode in settings.  All I can do is turn off DHCP.  Is this what you are suggesting?  Secondly, I have two Google Home Nest routers.  Will Google Home configure the second router correctly or do I need to configure that manually?  I assume I need to turn off Wifi on the ISP Router?  Thanks

If there's no bridge mode option in your ISP router modem combo you need to turn off its Wifi then after that setup your 1 Nest wifi router and 3 points. You can wired your switch from your Nest wifi router for your other devices. About your other Nest wifi router, you can add it as a point as well if you need too but if your home is not that big 1 router and 3 points will cover a lot of coverage already. Take note that Nest Wifi router covers 2200 square feet and 1 point cover 1600 square feet.

Jeff,  Still looking for some guidance.

Let me explain a couple of things before I go into more technical details.

Firstly, not a big house but all one floor and about 3500 sq ft.  Walls are also solid brick so signals do not travel so far.

The router is not ideally situated and is close to one corner of the house and would be complicated to get it more central.  My research seemed to indicate that putting a second google  nest mesh router central would be a good idea.  My thinking was that this device would more or less support the other 3 nest mesh points.  I could then have music in different rooms or stream TV.  I have a 1GB fibre optic internet connection which is obviously pretty quick.  I have an ethernet switch which supports 3 devices amplifier/receiver, a TV (for netflix, youtube etc) and Android receiver.

Technical side -  the ISP modem router does not have a bridge mode but does have the option to turn off wifi and to activate/deactivate the DHCP ip4 & IP6 server.  On the ISP router If I turn off the DHCP server nothing seems to work.  Turn the ISP router DHCP server back on most things operate but performance is not good.  The furthest Nest point seems to indicate that it is only working on the 2.4ghz signal and if I try to connect my iPhone X to WIFI in that location there is barely a signal at all.   I wanted to send a screenshot of the ISP router DHCP server config and I was wondering whether  need to make an adjustment there as the First Nest Mesh router has DHCP on but in Google Home Advanced setting , WAN setting DHCP is on but says "You  cannot edit these settings at the moment.  But it always says that!  I just wonder whether I have the right sequence of setting up DHCP?  Is the issue that the Mesh Nest router is not configured correctly.  I just want fast internet through the house and all three points capable of playing music through their speaker.  Hoping this all make sense.

Hey, BigBadger.
As an update for you, I wanted to let you know that we have a firmware update coming out now. Some people may have already received the update, but most will see it coming still. Everyone will have it before the end of April. If you receive that update and don't see an improvement in your issues here, please let me know and we can keep looking into things.
Thanks.

Hey, BigBadger.
Just to add to that last update, the update version for both Google WiFi and Nest WiFi will be 14150.43.80. If you are seeing a different version number when you check in Google Home, you have yet to receive the updated firmware. Let me know if you have any questions about that.
Thanks.

Hi again, BigBadger.

I know we've been waiting on the firmware release, but I wanted to check in to see if you have received that or seen any changes in your situation. It's been some time since we looked at this together. Let me know if you're still looking for input on this.

Thanks.
