Google Mesh Reports Super-Fast Download Speeds But Nearby Wireless Devices Report Much Slower Speeds

I have a Google Mesh model H2D purchased from Costco. This item includes one router and three pods. Because my solar panels require a dedicated ethernet connection, I bought two sets, so I have a main router operating to serve my 3K sq ft house and the other router and six pods placed around the property. Most of the time, I have strong connections that adequately serve our computers and my Ring security cameras of which I have 14.

Our issue is that incoming internet speeds to our Spectrum modem show as 500mbps and often faster. The pods also all report similar numbers for download speeds, "blazing fast." However, wireless devices such as our computers and cell phones report far lower values, 50mbps, 150mbps. We sometimes have problems on video calls, for example, and service speeds drop so low that calls terminate.  This is very bad!

We had Spectrum check everything. A hard-wired connection to the Spectrum router works great. Wireless, not so good. What can we check or change to improve our wireless performance on our computers? I assumed that our Google router and all of our pods are updated automatically.

Thank you,

Mark

Hey MHB1954,

I have a couple of things for you try. If you have already tried these, let me know and we can look at other steps. First, in your DNS settings, are you using the default settings or have you tried the Google DNS values? You can find the steps for changing the DNS settings here: https://goo.gle/3lEU2by. Also in that link, you'll see a link to the Google DNS settings.

Also, in your advanced network settings, do you have IPv6 enabled? If so, try disabling that and running new speed tests and let m know if you see a difference.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi, Jeff, thank you for these tips, I am just now getting to try these now on Sunday. I'll let you know what happens. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply.

Hi again, Jeff, well, that didn't take so long. 😉

My IPV6 is disabled and DNS is automatic. I toggled the IPV6 just for kicks and it didn't change anything with it on, so it's back to "off."

Thanks!

Hey MHB1954,

One thing to try is to change from automatic DNS to custom and use the Google DNS servers. To do that you will set the servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. You can reference the DNS settings here: https://goo.gle/3aXOJJy. Once you've set the DNS to the Google Public DNS, restart things and see how performance is impacted.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi, Mel and Jeff!

I changed the primary to 8888 and the secondary to 8844, restarted the system, and there was no noticeable difference, in fact, some devices seem slower, so I reverted the settings and restarted it all and will await the next ideas... THANKS!

Hello everyone,

@MHB1954, appreciate the update. If you haven't already, try changing the WiFi password to re-establish the connection of your devices to your network. Let's see if that will improve the internet speed.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,
Lovely
