Google Nest wifi will not connect to internet

I looked for a replacement for my TP-Link AX73 because it would keep only half of my 40+ wifi devices actively accessible. It became impossible to add new devices. Google Nest Wifi looked to be a viable alternative, but I have spent several days trying to get it working right. I tried six times to install it using the Google Home app. Most of those attempts resulted not connecting to Comcast internet via my Netgear CM700 modem. The TP-Link had no problem doing this. I then tried following several Youtube demos with no success.

As a last resort, I put the TP-Link back in service and connected the Google Nest to one of its LAN ports. It connected to the internet immediately. After some time to let it sort out the devices on the network, I checked and found only four of the devices on the Google Nest and everything else still on the TP-Link or inactive. After some googling, I found that this arrangement could cause problems due to double NAT. Solutions suggested bridging and using same SSID. I could not find a way to bridge the TP-Link so I did it on the Google Nest. I did not find any change in the device distribution after this and found the same result after using same SSID on both.

I must be doing something wrong, but I have run out of ideas to use the Google Nest to meet my goals.

Hi klrock,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with setting up your Google WiFi. I'd love to know more about this, and I have a few questions:

  • What message are you getting when you tried setting up your Google WiFi directly from the modem?
  • Does your TP-Link router have the same SSID as your Google WiFi?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Edward

Edward,

the answers are:

"What message are you getting when you tried setting up your Google WiFi directly from the modem? "

The message was something to the effect of "Unable to connect to the internet"

"Does your TP-Link router have the same SSID as your Google WiFi?"
The 2.4GHz bands have the same name but the 5GHz bands have different names.

A question for me?
I have typically managed and accounted for my devices using a spreadsheet that is very helpful.  Normally I use two apps  for input.
1) Advanced IP Scanner
2) Fing
Neither of these can find the devices on the Google Nest wifi.  If ther is a way, please advise.  Is it possible to export the client list from Google Nest, such as a text or csv file?

Thanks,
Kerry

My Google Nest Wifi was working well before I installed a new Arris SB8200 modem. After installing the Arris modem Google Nest Wifi couldn't find the internet despite the other ethernet port good connection to the internet (via direct ethernet to my computer). As a result, I factory reset my Google Nest Wifi with no luck on connecting it back through my new Arris modem. As a result, with the help of my ISP Cox, I reverted back to my old modem. Unfortunately even with the old Cox modem I continue to receive the message during my Google Home Wifi setup , "Connection issue: The modem isn't giving your Wifi point an internet connection." No matter how many times I restart the modem, I continue to receive the same message. Please help. Tks!

I resolved the issue by placing an older Nighthawk Router between the modem and the Google Nest Router via an ethernet cable as mentioned in the vLAN tagging Google Nest Wifi instructions. Apparently Cox Communications uses a vLAN Tag although no error message from the Google Nest Router or any conversation with Cox Communication indicated this was the case. If you have tried add a Google Wifi router to a modem and it repeatedly asks you to cycle on the modem, then the router, this vLAN tagging is likely the issue. The fix is simple if you have another router that supports vLAN tagging, simply plug it in via ethernet cable between your modem and the router. No changes to settings on that router were necessary--it simply worked. Now to remove that temporary router and to see if it continues working without it!
