Mesh Network Slower than ATT Router

AndyA1648
Community Member

I set up a nest network with the primary node on my main floor hard wired to the ATT router.

I have two nodes connected to the home node, one upstairs and one in my basement.  All have strong signals and when I run a speed test on the google home app it reports 600 MB+ both ways.

However every device connected to the mesh network (laptop, old Mac, multiple iPhones) and all get 50-60 MBs Down and usually 25 or so up.

When I connect to the ATT wifi I get much faster speeds if I am close to the router, worse when I go up or downstairs but still much faster than the google wifi.

Thoughts on what the problem might be?

Hi, AndyA1648.

Sorry for the inconsistent speeds you're seeing. I know that can be confusing and frustrating. I have a few questions that might help us figure out what is happening here.

  • Is your ATT WiFi running at the same time as your mesh network?
  • When you run a mesh test, what are the results for connection strength at each point?
  • Are you using the Home app to run your speed tests, or are you using a speed test website?
  • Do you have any preferred activities set up in Home?
  • If you prioritize a device on the network, does it change your speed measurements at all?

We can dig into this and find out what's happening. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

I'm having the same issue.

I have the Google home app and the points show great connection but there is a big speed difference. What else can I do?

Hi Paul - I ended up turning off my ATT Routers Wi-Fi support to try and avoid any competing resources that may have been in place.  That helped some but still not seeing anywhere near the download speed reported by the mesh network.  I think some of that is device dependent as well how many devices you have on the network, but that is just a guess on my part.

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Mel

Hey everyone,

I wanted to follow up and see if you are still in need of any help. Have you had the chance to try the suggestion above? If yes, how is it?

Thanks,
Mel

Hey all,

I haven’t gotten the speed to match with each other but I haven’t had any connection issues.
Thank you for your help

I'm happy to hear you're not seeing any connection issues, Paul18. Do you want to keep looking at things to see if we can sort out the speed troubles? Let me know if you want to keep looking into this.

Thanks,

Jeff

Here are answers to your questions:

  • Is your ATT WiFi running at the same time as your mesh network?  It is running at the same time.  The google device is hardwired to my ATT router, which has the WiFi running out of it.  I am not sure if I have the option to turn it off or not.
  • When you run a mesh test, what are the results for connection strength at each point?  When I run mesh tests I have always gotten good results
  • Are you using the Home app to run your speed tests, or are you using a speed test website?  When I run a speed test on the home app it comes back with blazing fast speeds (601 MB down/106 up).  When I run a speed test on my phone it is very inconsistent, occasionally I get  100 MB down but usually much less than that.
  • Do you have any preferred activities set up in Home?  I work from home and I work in game development so I often download builds that are 6GB in size.
  • If you prioritize a device on the network, does it change your speed measurements at all?  If I prioritize the device running a big download it helps a little bit but not much.

We can dig into this and find out what's happening. I look forward to hearing back from you.

The most common thing I run into is downloading a 3 - 4 GB game build on my phone and it never gest about 20 - 30 MB/s speed.  My co-workers are able to download a lot faster and are waiting on me to finish.

Thanks for the info, AndyA1648. That's helpful.

I met with an internal team today and we discussed this. It's being looked into now and if I have any information about this, I'll update here. One thing to check would be the preferred activities setting. Here's how:

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap Wi-Fi and then Settings and then Preferred activities.
  3. Check each activity type you would like your network to prioritize.

Preferred activities remain prioritized for your network until you turn them off.

At this time, I would make sure you don't have any selected. If you do, remove them and see if it helps.

Thanks.

Hi again, AndyA1648.

I'm just checking to see if you were able to check those preferred activities and to see if they had any impact on your situation.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff - Apologies, I was waiting to see what the internal team had to say about things.

I did check my preferred activities lists and I show Video Conferencing and Gaming, Video Conferencing was checked and I unchecked. it.  I did not notice any changes to performance.

Those are the only two options I show.

Note that if I prioritize a device it does make a small impact on its download speeds but it is relatively small.

Hey, AndyA1648.

Apologies if you've already checked, but can you look into the WiFi settings in the Home app and see if IPv6 is enabled? If it is, go ahead and disable it and see what impact it has. If it's already disabled (which is the default setting), let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff - I just checked and IPv6 is already disabled.

I just turned off the "Wifi router and point usage stats" from the Privacy settings and will see if that helps.

A bit more information.  I had to download a 19GB game on the Epic Game store so I decided to restart the google mesh router from the Google home device before I started. When it first started downloading it was was great and cruising at 40+ GB, then after a few minutes it ended up running at 10GB or so.  That is the speed I typically see.

If I restart the router (Google or AT&T) it seems to work really well for a very brief period of time.

Thanks for the added info, AndyA1648.

It's really odd that it's strong and fast for a time and then degrades over time. I'm going to have to continue to consult with an internal team and see what more I can learn here. I'll let you know when I hear more.

Thanks.

Hey, Andy1648.

I'm happy to hear there's been some improvement. Have the new speeds been stable?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Consistently better for sure.  e.g. - I just did a speed test on my phone in my basement and got 100MB download. Def. not the 500 MB but much better than before.

For reference I forgot to mention I had to restart the google router after I turned the AT&T one off before I saw improvements.

Hello - thank you for following up on this.  I am seeing better performance the last few days after turning off my AT&T UVerse wi-fi.  So now I am seeing 100MB or so download speeds on devices instead of the 20MB - 30MB.  Still not at the 500+MB that the google mesh speed test shows but its a definite improvement with that change.
