Nest Wi-Fi Pro Slow Upload And Poor Connection

Bowser05

I've had the Nest Wi-Fi Pro since the day it released. 3 unit mesh. When I first installed it it worked great, but over time it's gotten worse and worse. Most of the devices tend to work well but I have a laptop (brand new) and a Pixel 7 phone that both will get 1 bar of signal even if I'm right next to ANY of the routers.

We have a 500up/500down connection that has proven to work wonderfully when testing on the modem and on my Netgear router, but on the Nest Wi-Fi Pro I get around 150down/10up, which is absolutely terrible. And that's with the devices that work, the 2 or 3 that won't retain a signal I'm lucky to get 5down/0.50up, usually worse.

I've tested the mesh connection, and all 3 routers say they have good connections. I've tested the speed via the Google Home app, and it says I'm getting 450/450 which is good. But in actual practice, nothing is working right.

I've tried power cycling, with no luck, and today I did a full factory reset, and nothing has changed.

Does anybody have any ideas why this might be? It's making it really hard to work, and I rarely have the luxury of plugging into one of the routers.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. We had the original google wi-fi routers and those were mediocre, and now when we upgraded to the Nest Wi-Fi Pro it's function worse, which doesn't make sense. Thanks!

While i appreciate the attempt at the help, it's not useful to repeat things i outlined as having already done. That clearly won't work.

Also, I'm not sure there is a way to update manually. I checked where you instructed and every other option i could find. Upon further research, the consensus seems to be that Google doesn't allow that and updates automatically on its own. 😢

Hey folks,

@Bowser05, thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for helping out, @RachelGomez123.

Best,
Abi

Hi everyone,

It's me again. Just checking in to see if you still need assistance with this. Hope the previous post helped. Let us know if you have additional questions ― we'd love to help.

Regards,
Abi

I appreciate the check in! I have been away from home, but I'll be home tomorrow and I will try your suggestions, as some of that is stuff I haven't tried before. Will report back tomorrow. Thanks!

I realize i never answered your questions. We are using a modem/router combo, and the wifi is off and it is indeed in bridge, so that's not the issue.

I tried all your suggestions, including dns. Now I'm able to get equal up vs down, which is a marked improvement.

That being said, the signal is still poor in about half the house despite having 3 units in the mesh and the Google home app's tests showing strong mesh and correct speeds.

Oddly it's about half the devices. Half are working great, the others are not. Varying from iphones to galaxy phones to laptops. It's about a 4000sq ft house, 2 story, and a 3 unit mesh spread out properly should easily work fine, so I'm at a loss.

I have one in the living room, another as far as possible in another section downstairs and the 3rd the floor above the main, directly above it. Between each one, besides the floor separation, there is no odd barrier like a kitchen, bathroom, or anything like that. Only a hallway, at worst. And the house was built in the early 2000s so it's not that old.

Hope all those details helps narrow things down. Thanks for the help thus far!

Hello Bowser05,

Thanks for the update. I'd like to check in again if there's any improvement in the last few days. We'll wait for your reply.

Cheers,
Abi

Hi,

Still weak signal in the same places, but I've generally been getting consistent down and up at least. Naturally, the further away I am, the lower the speed test result. There's one location that is close to 2 different points and still gets no signal and super slow speeds though (30/30 or worse).

Even though the sqft rating for each unit is clear, I have a feeling I'll need to get another point to give the signal I need. I'm just worried about having 4 points so close together like that.

3 points are rated to cover almost double our houses size, yet it's not consistent in a few areas despite using a fully recommended point placement.

I'm at a loss at this point. 😢
