Nest Wifi Pro Points super slow vs main router

MKtheBearded

Just spent over an hour "troubleshooting" with Nest support and I am in the same position I was prior to that.

Used to have the 2nd Gen mesh system in my house. I knew I was not getting the speeds I should have so I upgraded my modem and the mesh system to the Nest Wifi Pro. Puts the points in the exact same spots as the previous gen. While I get a better mesh connectivity of "Great" vs "Good" with the previous gen, my speeds while connected to the points are less than 20Mbps. When I am connected to the main router I get the full 350+ Mbps that I pay for. All the trouble shooting I did on my own plus the minimal that support had me do and I am in the same position as I was. I feel like I would have been better off sticking with the previous gen and just upgrading the modem. (previous modem was for 100Mbps and new is for 800Mbps). I am at a loss as to why the speeds are so slow at the points. I understand things can interfere but if they weren't with the previous gen why are they now?

I have the same problem, my speed while connected to the Nest Wifi Pro is less than 200 Mbps, and when connected to the main router I get a full 650. When I test the internet speed through Google Home connected to the Nest Wifi pro it shows that it is 650 Mbps, the mesh connectivity says Excellent (I have 3 units), but when I test the speed with a Speedtest (Ookla) it shows around 200 Mbps.

How can posible happend this?

Yup. Same exact thing. Ookla shows 350-375 normally, when connected to the main Nest router. Home app always shows well over that, regardless of the router or point I'm connected to. Support tells me to make sure my phone is connected to a point then run the test, I had to explain to them that is not how it works. The Home app does not run a speed of the network to the point, just to the main router. He had to go "check on that" and came back apologizing. And then asked me to run the mesh test. Which I did and it was "Great" but still unrelated to my issue. I don't get why the same device can get two completely different speeds the way it does. I have no doubt if I hooked the old fen system back up I'd get close to full speed. I also just found out that I am past my point to return them to beat buy so they need to figure out their issue quick but I know they won't. I'm sure this is something that's been there since they came out. Frustrating!!

I have the same issues.   Any device connected to the nest mesh network getting 20mbps .   I connect to the wifi on the router from my ISP and i get 850 mbps...

Why even use NEST Wifi mesh if the ISPs is faster...

Is there an update or something?

I had the same issue last week.  Google support ultimately had me factory reset, and that fixed that issue.  However, since then, the points would start to reboot themselves randomly, and my wifi would be down for hour+.  Google support took a bunch of info, and escalated it to senior support.  I was told I should get an update in 24-48 hours.  It's been more than 48 at this point, and no updates.

Hi everyone,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have, and we apologize for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Which Google/Nest router are we working with? What device are you using to set up your network (iOS or Android)? Do you have the Internet on your modem?

You can do a sequential reboot of your entire network and see if that helps, or please perform a 2-minute power cycle on your entire network to re-establish the connection on your connected devices. Here's how:

  1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the child points.
  4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
  5. Connect the power cord to the modem then to your router and points.

Also, you can give these steps a try:

  1. If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  2. Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
  3. Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
  4. Turn off IPv6:
    1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
    2. Tap the Wi-Fi coin  and then Settings.
    3. Scroll down and tap Advanced networking.
    4. Scroll down to IPv6.
    5. Toggle the switch off Toggle button off.
  5. Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
  6. Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  7. If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

You may skip any step that you’ve done already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dan

So here is something bizarre. Tonight the speeds off my point were over 200Mbps. I tested again about 15 min later because I noticed some slowness in an app and I'm getting less than 25 now. This is so weird.

I was getting 22Mbps from both points. I unplugged one and that seems to have fixed my issue. I'm connected to the point in my living room and getting close to 300Mbps now. Interesting since the other point was equidistant from both the living room point and the main Nest router. Going to try and find a spot to put it further away and see if it clear anything up when all three are hooked up.

I’m wondering if the known issue about Google Home under-representing connection speed still exists - I am getting such strange results. I am in Australia and have a 1000Mbps FTTB NBN connection.

Speedtest.net iPhone App (iPhone 15 Pro)

-730Mbps [Wireless 6.0GHz, main AP]
-197Mbps [Wireless 5.0GHz, secondary mesh AP]

Speedtest.net Website (Google Chrome, Mac Studio 2023)

-760Mbps [Ethernet to main AP]

Google Home app:

-225Mbps Internet Speed, 247Mbps Device Speed, 190Mbps Nest Wifi Pro Speed [Wireless 6.0GHz, main AP]

I have read about the known issue of PPPoE 500Mbps+ connections being under-reported for speed in Google Home, however my devices all have the latest firmware which was meant to fix that.

The most alarming result is 190Mbps between mesh points. I live in a small apartment which is basically a square floor plan with a wall that divides the square in half. Main AP is in the living room, and the mesh points are at each end of the dividing wall, in direct line of sight of the main AP. Router placement surely can’t be an issue.

I have tried various things such as disabling & enabling IPv6, factory resetting the entire network, disabling & enabling Nest Wifi Cloud Services, adding & removing a Guest network, and enabling & disabling WPA3.

Should anyone from Google read this & have any ideas about why my Mesh points have such a slow connection between them, I would love to know how to fix it.

cheers

Also strangely, a lot of the time when I am connected to the primary AP, Google Home reports that my iPhone is “Wired” rather than Wireless. Very strange.

I have some screenshots to support all of this, attached. Speedtest.net used while connected to secondary AP (primary is “Living room Wifi”) - so it just gets more bizarre regarding speed reporting.

Mate I have the exact same issue

Main AP shows over 700mbps but as soon as I move to a secondary unit the speeds are under 100mbps.

All AP are wired back to the main AP and the desktop is wired to the secondary AP

Super frustrating

Hello viirus,

Apologies! We know it can be a little bit frustrating to have this kind of concern. Have you tried the steps above? If so, how was it? Are there any error messages afterwards?

Regards,

Dan

Hello Andres_A,

Could you confirm if the speed results are still slow? Could you confirm if you've tried the steps above?

Kind regards,

Dan
