Nest Wifi ethernet about 90% slower than WiFi

Hi,

New Nest WiFi user, and having multiple serious issues with the setup. This post is about ethernet speed.

Network topology:

Internet (fibre) <-> fibre-specific modem <-> Google Nest Wifi <-> Cat-5e/Cat-6 cable <-> Windows PC

The Windows PC is running Windows 10, currently up to date as normal, with the ethernet cable plugged into the port on the motherboard rather than a PCI device.

Using any cable I have available, the Google Nest Wifi either fails to establish an ethernet connection to the PC or, when it does, provides an ethernet connection that is substantially degraded from the nine year old TP-Link device it replaced.

My internet service normally provides about 65 - 80mbps, and speedtest.net from my phone over WiFi does actually report that I'm getting those speeds to the internet when running through WiFi only. Speedtest results:

  • Windows PC via ethernet: download 6.62mbps, upload 9.33mbps (Speedtest). Yes, confirming the download speed is slower than upload. Ping is also massive, 243ms down, 586ms up - this is about ten times my usual for download, and twenty times usual for upload.
  • Windows PC Steam download rate: 1-1.1MB/sec.
  • iPhone via WiFi on same Google Nest WiFi: 60.98mbps down, ping 14ms. Upload not tested.
  • Google Home app 'Network Test': 64mbs down, 19mbps up.
  • Google Home app real-time speed monitoring with the Windows PC selected, with load applied by a Steam game download: 11.1mbps (Steam reports download rate of 1.1MB/s, close enough).
  • Google Home app 'Internet speed test', with the Windows PC selected: internet speed 65mbps.

So the Google Home app believes that this Windows PC is receiving nearly ten times the download rate that it truly is in real-world usage.

This issue has also been intermittent since installation. I had a period this morning of normal speeds, now degraded again with no change at all in configuration.

Troubleshooting steps already taken:

  • Unable to remove the ISP-facing modem, this is not an option.
  • Tried numerous combinations of ethernet cables.
  • Restarted PC.
  • Restarted Nest Wifi device and entire network.
  • No preferred activities set.
  • Enabled/disabled IPv6.
  • No VPN in use.
  • Tested with no other devices on the network.
  • Tested with no other network traffic reported by Windows performance monitor.
  • Tested with 'prioritise device' selected for this Windows PC: no effect.
  • Update: tested with a MacBook Pro using the same ethernet cable and a USB-C adaptor, which achieves 70mbps. The Windows PC is the only device on the network with degraded wired networking performance.

Google Support already contacted via email regarding a similar configuration issue, with no response after around 24 hours.

I've spent multiple hours googling for a solution and found hundreds of posts about the same issue, with none of them showing a solution. If there's no reasonable hope of resolution, and no response from Google Support, I'll be returning these under warranty on Monday.

Any solutions available?

Given it's been five days without a reply either here, or from Google Support to my email request, I'm going to assume that my hope of any actual help can be stowed at this point. Good chat, team.
