Network reset - "Wrong QR code" error

I moved my Internet router (Starlink) from one location to another, which involved unplugging it and plugging it back in. Thereafter, the Starlink router was receiving the Internet fine but my Google network was getting no Internet signal when connecting to it (or trying to connect to it). On the advice of several help posts I did a factory reset of the Google Wifi in the Home app.

Adding the first puck worked fine and set up a new Wifi network which I gave a new name.

I was unable to add any of the other four pucks. Each time, it the app got to the point of asking me to scan the QR code, and then returned a "Wrong QR code" error.

I skipped the QR code step and manually entered the eight-digit codes on the bottom. That got past the screen to the point of getting to the "Connecting to Wifi router" screen, whereupon the app tries connecting for a minute and then gives a "Couldn't connect to device error."

How can this be fixed?

Thank you

Hi keleven,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have, and we apologize for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Which Google/Nest router are we working with? Which is the main router and which are the points? What device are you using to set up your network (iOS or Android)? Do you have the Internet on your modem?

Try these steps:

1. Reinitiate Factory Reset:

  • Unplug all Google Wifi pucks except the one you successfully set up.
  • In the Google Home app, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Devices.
  • Tap the three dots on the unconnected pucks and choose Factory Reset.
  • After a few minutes, start adding them again.

2. Optimize QR Code Scanning:

  • Ensure adequate lighting and a clear view of the QR code.
  • Hold your phone steady and close to the puck (4-6 inches).
  • Clean the QR code and camera lens if dirty or smudged.
  • If your phone has trouble focusing, try tapping the screen to adjust focus manually.

3. Manual Code Entry:

  • If QR code scanning fails, continue with manual code entry.
  • Double-check the 8-digit code on the puck for accuracy.
  • Type slowly and carefully, avoiding typos.

4. Check Placement and Interference:

  • Place the puck you're adding close to the primary puck during setup.
  • Avoid physical obstructions or electronic devices that could interfere with the signal (e.g., microwaves, cordless phones).

5. Restart Devices:

  • Restart your phone and the primary Google Wifi puck.
  • Temporarily disable Bluetooth on your phone.

6. Clear App Cache:

  • Clear the Google Home app's cache and data on your phone.

7. Isolate Network Issues:

  • Temporarily disconnect other devices from your Wi-Fi network to reduce congestion.
  • If you're using a VPN or firewall, temporarily disable them.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dan
