Optimizing Device Response

I recently setup a 3-point network, replacing my existing modem/router combo from Verizon FiOS. It's a relatively small space and all 3 points are pretty close together with 2 on the lower level and 1 on the upper level (think triangle). My Pixel 7 Pro has no problems at all with speed, but my wife's iPhone 14 Pro is unusable. Furthermore, devices such as Nest Hubs located in the same room as a point are incredibly slow to respond to voice commands and loading media. I need to know how to optimize this network or my wife is going to insist I get rid of it and revert to the Quantum Gateway, which has terrible range.

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on. 

A few questions: aside from your wife's iPhone 14 Pro, how many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices? 

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Thanks for your reply! To answer your questions, the a Nest Hub Max and Nest Hub upstairs are both very slow on the network. The main point replaced the modem/router from my ISP, so no double NAT to worry about. That is located in the living room, immediately off the front door. The next room, the kitchen, has point #2 and that's where the Nest Hub Max is. Point #3 and other Nest Hub are in the bedroom positioned directly above the living room. There are no special characters in my network name, but there are in the password and I'd be concerned if that's an issue. I'll disable IPv6 to see if that helps, but again disappointing if that's an issue, and I'll let you know if the DNS change helps.

I wanted to give it a couple of days before reporting back. I disabled IPv6 and used the recommended DNS configurations. Initially, my upload speeds dropped significantly–as low as 203 Mbps–but today the down/up was tested as 906 Mbps/828 Mbps. As long as the Nest Hub upstairs in the bedroom sticks to Point #3 in the same room and doesn't connect back to Point #1 (the main router), its connection is adequate. The same is true for the Nest Hub Max in my kitchen if it stays connected to Point #2.

Where my Pixel switches between points as I move about the house, it seems the iPhone doesn't want to let go of the main point regardless of distance.

To clarify, how are you checking where your devices are connected to? You should be able to do that in the Google Home app. Here's how:
 

1. Open the Google Home app.

2. Tap Wi-Fi then select Devices.

3. The numbers below Devices represent the total Internet (WAN) traffic to and from the Wifi point. Tap a specific device to get more information about the device. Once a device is selected, it will display the Speed and Info tabs. 

4. The Speed tab shows Real time usage — how much data it has downloaded and uploaded from, and to the internet.

5. The Info tab shows Device information such as:

  • Brand
  • IP address
  • MAC address
  • Type of connection
  • Type of device

You will be able to confirm where your iPhone is actually connected to by checking the type of the device. It’s the last one listed on the Info tab. For more details, you can check this helpful link. Let us know how it goes.

Hello sbeachx75,

Can you try to forget the network your iPhone is connected to and try to reconnect again? Make sure you're in the area where one of the points are. Check if your iPhone connects to the point after that.

I had actually already tried this while I was in the room with Point #2, and it does connect to it, but once it finds Point #1 again it doesn't let go.

Our apologies for the late reply. I'd like to check in again if you're still having the same issue. If yes, could you try to do a factory data reset and then swap the points? Also, try to move the points a bit nearer to each other. Let us know how it goes.
